Since I am the most avid 4e fan, I will say it first - 4e is failing! 5e is coming

Examining the pagecounts more closely, the individual 4E PHB's have:

PHB1 = 320 pages
PHB2 = 224 pages
PHB3 = 224 pages

total PHB = 768 pages. (*)

Rules Compendium + Player's Essentials = 320 + 352 = 672 pages (**)

Difference between (*) and (**) = 96 pages.

I suppose consolidating the relevant content in the PHB's, may be able to save some space.

I was thinking along the same lines.

Also remember that several pages in PHB2 are repeats of keyword definitions and rules clarifications/updates (particularly towards the back). And the same was said to be in PHB3. So that type of info would only need to be printed once in updated/corrected/clarified form, and so on. Same can be said of any intro chapters (only need one intro chapter rather than 3, etc).

However, the DM's Kit and the Gamma World book are listing as $40 each for 192 and 152 pages, so I'm guessing some wires got crossed.

I have no clue what the first book might include. 4e doesn't really have a lot of rules. And, yeah, it's way too early for it.

The latter two sound like they'll basically be themed DDI article collections.

And I'm totally flabbergasted by the GammaWorld setting book - now that's a blast from the past!

From Amazon: "A D&D Genre Setting" ... now this could get interesting if there's more "genre settings" in the works.

A 4e Gamma World is definitely awesome (only played it a few times way back when). However, for my own personal nostalgia, Star Frontiers 4e would hit the mark nicely. We have to stop the Sathar from conquering Volturnus!!

I think it might be a little to early to be looking FOR a new edition at this POINT, but I do think the Rules Compendium is about FIVE years too soon.
