New Article: We're Oldschool, Promise!

New article up, from the designers inspiration/roots in D&D.

Now, I haven't taken the fine toothed comb to this article, but my gut reaction is: the designers see the boards, see the 1e grognard rage, and try to legitimize themselves.

I would doubt very much if they care about 1E grognard rage. You're not a customer of theirs and they're not about to get you as one no matter what they do, so why would they try to legitimize themselves to a statistically insignificant set of gamers? It's simply an introduction and credentials in case people are going 'I've never heard of this Henisoo guy. Is he even a gamer?'

Not everything is a conspiracy.

I disagree. I think most "grognards" are gonna buy 4E whether they realize or admit it now or not. Actually, considering that the average age of D&D players is late 20s, more grognards will be buying the game than rookies will. Might as well keep your bases loaded.

Most issues of Dungeon or Dragon has an editorial that details some anecdote from the editor's gaming. Sometimes it's a current game, sometimes an old game, sometimes a contrast. This is effectively an issue of Dragon, it's normal to do this sort of thing. I think you are just trying to see what you want to see.

Occam's razor says that the simplest solution tends to be the right one. They are probably writing the article because they want to write an article.

No kidding. I'd imagine time would be better spent chasing customers who didnt hate 3rd edition.

Whow there partner; key down the hostility.

I started playing D&D in 3e. I can list the things I know about 1e on my hand. I will be buying 4e.

WotC does listen to the forums; they decided to not advance Eberron's timeline due solely to the vocal outcry on their messageboard.

I'm just amused at the apparent coincidence of all the people on this board saying how 4e isn't like 1e and how long they've been attached to The Game, and then the designers come out with an article discussing how much they love the good ol' days. Wyatt even titled his segment "No school like the Old school".

Should I put a smiley so that you know I'm not being all venomous at WotC? Here: :D

Nah. If I were on the 4e design team, I would most certainly do an article of this sort. It establishes a sort of 'gamer cred', showing that the people who are designing the new edition are, in fact, invested in the game for its own sake, and won't simply disrespect what has gone before for money.

Or something like that.

Well I know that this article is establishing "Cred", letting everyone know that the 4e designers aren't some new kids hired out of an Anime con (silly hyperbole there folks).

And I agree that if I were a designer, I'd have put this article out.

I'd... have just done it sooner. ;)
