New (AVATAR) Episodes Begin Again Tonight In USA

The fight between Aang and Firelord Ozai was the best part, and took up like half an hour or so by itself, though they split it up a bit. It seemed really appropriate when Aang made a sort of planet-like surrounding of all four elements around him, and kicked arse. Toph's fight on the airship was sweet too.

I think only two minor bits disappointed me; Sokka didn't do much swordfighting, and Katara didn't do a lot with her waterbending skills. They were both a bit more impressive on the Day of Black Sun or other times. Otherwise, an awesome finale.

It did look like they're planning some kind of sequel though to cover a few loose ends, like whatever happened to Zuko's mother. They didn't show what became of Azula, either. And I'm curious if Aang would ever be able to re-establish the Air Nomads, or if he really will be the last airbender in the history of that world.
Not sure what you were expecting from Sokka and Katara. Sokka was always the idea-man, not really much of a swordfighter. He has that great scene on the airship where he saves Tof. And Katara? Heck, she performed a major feat.

As to loose ends, I'm not sure we need anything spelled out for us. Looks like everything starts coming up roses.

The one thing I was not comfortable with was the very very very last scene (highlight for spoiler)
where Ang and Katara kiss
i think because, in my brain, i think of Ang as being a very young child.... so how much feeling could really have been in that action?
Gotta admit, it was a little creepy how much passion went into that scene. We're not talking about a twelve-year kissing his girlfriend sweetly. That was a long, hot n' heavy bit of face-sucking there.

It really makes absolutely no sense. It's not like they didn't realize how popular it was, or how valuable the franchise is. they're still putting out Avatar toys/lunchboxes/coloring books, etc. They've got a movie coming out, helmed by a big-name director, with options for two sequels. You'd think they would want to, y'know...air the episodes?

Maybe they can charge more ad revenue if they make it an "event" like this?

I dunno, I read a blog with a theory that Avatar skewed too old for what Nick wanted to aim at. Apparently while Avatar merchandise sells well, it doesn't sell as well as say, Spongebob, because older fans are less likely to buy toys for some reason.

I suspect somewhere some Nick executive didn't like Avatar and kept it off for personal reasons. Sometimes Executives can be weird about things. Because of the failure of Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Warner Executives removed Looney Tunes cartoons from most of their networks. Which boggles my mind, considering those cartoons have existed for over 50 years on TV and have always had pretty good ratings.

It's really crazy to burn off these episodes in the middle of Summer--10 episodes in a single week. Sheesh.

Saw the finale, and really enjoyed it. A lot of cool cameos from past episodes, including Jun the Bounty Hunter :) It certainly looks like Mike and Bryan were saving the best for last in terms of the fight scenes, and I wasn't disappointed at all with how they were executed, which considering generally how well done the fight scenes in Avatar were done should be expected.

Someone on a different message board suggested that they should have had the characters be a couple years older, which probably would have helped alleviate a bit of the "creepy" factor regarding Aang and Katara's last scene, or even how much of a Mary Sue that Azula was for most of the series (considering she's only 14 or 15 years old).

I thought it was almost perfect. I just wish they found another way to end it without the Lion-Turtle. That just came out of nowhere.

I'm going to miss Sokka and Toph. I was actually worried during the airship battle. For a minute, I forgot this wasn't anime and was expecting 3/4 of the cast to be killed off.

I'm glad they didn't time skip. I usually hate that (they're as bad as "It's A Wonderful Life" homage episodes), and the two most recent attempts, Legion of Super-Heroes season 2 and Ben 10: Alien Force, haven't changed my opinion.

But, yeah, the kiss was major icky. Should have just ended it on the hug.

BTW, I read on some message board or another that they are planning on doing a couple of specials to close out the series. Any truth to that? Considering the way the final episodes were buried, I'm not so sure.

I wasn't referring to any kind of time skip. I meant starting the series with the characters being a couple of years older.

Aang being 14 instead of 12
Katara being 16 instead of 14
Sokka being 17 instead of 15
Zuko being 18 instead of 16 (making him a full-fledged adult when he takes the throne)
Azula being 16 instead of 14
etc...

I thought they mentioned that it had essentially been a year since the 1st episode so all their ages would be age + 1.

The kiss was still creepy though.

They had, but if using the starting ages I listed above, then Aang and Katara would have been 15 and 17 respectively, which would be a couple degrees less creepy than 13 and 15

Just finished watching all three seasons of this and thought it was darn amazing. Great characters and storytelling, as well as world-building. Bravo!
