New Campaign, New Character?

First Post
Well, it's that time again for me. New campaign. I've played wizards, warriors, rogues and rangers, and I'm looking for something new. Can anyone lend me a character concept, or even a new core class that they've found to be interesting? I'm just getting tired of the stream of "Crit-master" fighters and "I make things go boom" wizards.

Thanks.

Scouting

I'm playing a druid for the first time ever in my current campaign. And I can heartily recommend it.

While I am the only divine spellcaster in the party so my role is a little skewed I've really enjoyed playing him as the preeminent scout. And I see the potential for playing a druid a number of different ways.

The key, as I see it, is animal companions. For the scout idea you might pick up a wolf, for the scent feat mostly, but then I recommend spending the rest of your animal companion slots on bats.

They fly, have phenomenal spot, listen, and move silently checks, and have blindsight out to forever. With the right spells you can train them pretty easily.

Then you move through the woods with the greatest of ease, get your wolf to pick up trails, use your bats to scout ahead, and then send the rest of the party in with a good idea of what's going on.

This is the powergamer perspective, but, spun another way, the Ranger is the huntsmen the Druid is the master of the Hunt.

I've always liked bards, though I have yet to play one (my current character is my first in quite some time and I got an idea I liked more than this one (half-orc fighter that hears call to be a paladin but can't answer because he is still struggling to break his chaotic nature)). It has several interesting role playing oppurtunities, and with multiclassing could become very interesting (I've more than once toyed with the idea of a Necromancer/Bard, singing bad to the bone in the middle of a grave yard as the decaying skeletons rise...).

see.. I normally play honourable, lawful dudes.. so.. my current two characters - a rogue who is n/e and murderous.. and a techhead who is a klepto.. and.. because I have gone outside my normal box for character ideas.. I am having a ball.

so.. what I would suggest.. is rather than think about what class.. think about what type of person you normally play.. and play something different.

1. Find a nice god or goddess of pleasure.

2. Go completely hedonistic and have spell focuses in Enchantment.

3. Be CN. This way you don't have to be evil or good, just pleasureable.

4. Have skill points in Profession: Coursean.

Here are some concepts I have been playing with. Most require a long term approach, though, and have a specific Prestige Class in mind at the outset:

Ranger/Necromancer/Pale Master
1st level Ranger, then 5 levels Necromancer, then PM. Take species enemy Aberrations and barred school Enchantment and make him a Neutral Illithid hunter.

Wizard/Duelist
12 levels of Wizard then go to Duellist. Requires you to invest in some cross-class skills. Works best as an Elf. At very high level.

Bard/Duelist
Much the same concept as above, but quicker and easier to meet the requirements for the Duelist class. Gives up some magical firepower though. Again, an Elf is probably a good option.

Barbarian/Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple
The other members of the tribe always whispered that his father was a demon ... they weren't quite right. Get a couple of levels of Barbarian, then 6 of Sorcerer before heading into the Dragon Disciple PrC.

Cleric/Wizard/Geomancer
Works best if you go with a Cleric who has the Nature domain (for the skill requirements), but can be done with any type (especially if your Int is high). Has a great deal of magical flexibility.

Fighter/Sorcerer/Spellsword
Get 4 levels in each of Fighter and Sorcerer, then go Spellsword. Focus on touch-delivered abd personal enhancement spells, rather than "boom boom" types, and you have a melee monster who feels quite different to the usual crit-master Fighter.
