I voted for "Grim Ledger', but 'Chaos Theory' has a nice ring as well, although maybe too close to 'Chaosium'. The others evoked mildly disturbing imagery, and did not put me in a happy, consumery, "I want to purchase your product" mood. Don't discount the moral majority.

Wow - thanks for all of the great suggestions and comments. The moral majority is something to consider, although I doubt they will be buying a lot of our products since they do have a rather dark bent to them. But I sill appreciate the concern that some of you have shown. It is good to hear opinions that you might not necessarily agree with. That is how we grow, no?

In regard to the "Inc" comment by Davelozzi, I'm pretty sure that since I said these are "potential" names of our company, that we are allowed to use Inc in that context. If that already was the name of the company and I was not incorporated, I'm quite sure I would be in BIG trouble. In either case, we are going to Inc. whatever name we decide to use...

What do some of you think about "Caliban Games?" He was the misunderstood monster from Shakespeare's Tempest. We aspire to write 'high brow' adventures with strong doses of riddles and roleplaying. I think Caliban might send a positive message while also referring to the "darker" material present...

Thanks again,
Scott

I voted for "Chaos Thoery" ... it's not overtly offensive and it is mnemonic in that it might crop up as a segueway in conversations about Chaosium like Black Anvil might in conversations about Black Isle(Baldur's Gate crpgs).

"Caliban" ... the similarity to the word 'Taliban' may be recognised as often as the Shakespearean reference ... I don't know if this is the sort of a ttention you would want to attract ... decidedly less dark than the others though.

Grim Ledger is sweet.

And don't listen to these nancy boy proseltizers.... anyone offended by this list who is reading this webpage should get their head examined. Sure, your Aunt Matilda who thinks Will and Grace are living in sin isn't going to buy anything by a company called Black Anvil. But then again, she'd say 20 Hail Marys just for walking into a gaming store. Anyone who would be at all interested in gaming products wouldn't even blink. The game is called DUNGEONS and Dragons, for god's sake! It's bondage from square 1.

Seriously... I'm amazed anyone said anything about the names besides Gut Puppet, which I can't even really imagine, but does sound vaguely disturbing.

And Dark Art? How many skillpoints does a Wizard get per level? Thought so. What's your problem again?

Hehehe how about "Dark Bent"?

I wouldn't choose any of the names on the list, not because of any moral qualms - I'd get the reason for the name from the context and that would be fine - but because they are nevertheless subtly negative and introverted. As someone's already said, they don't evoke confidence, despite being colourful and inventive.

British Airways once abandoned a livery scheme because its red and blue lines had a downward tick. The connotation was plane crashes.

I like creative companies to have slightly off-the-wall names. I forget the film on which I saw the credit but remember the special visual effects company, because it was called Backyard Levitation Inc. Come to think of it, Industrial Light & Magic was a cracking name, too.

On that kind of note, you invited suggestions, so: Eldritch Compass Press, Erudite Intermissions, Eldritch Announcements, Obvious Escape Routes. Sorry, it's late and I don't suppose I'm helping.

Good luck.

Shame on me for not knowing The Tempest, despite having seen a performance once but does it work out for Caliban? If not, I'd avoid the reference.

Of all the names on the list, I liked Black Anvil best as I imagined something be made on it -- that and you have a ready made logo. However, I think Grim Ledger and Chaos Theory are also good choices.

Perhaps a key question is how do YOU see the company? That could be a guide to the best name for you. Mind you, some of the ideas on this thread are good ones. Perhaps throw in Eldritch Press, Imagination Engine, Flights of Fancy Press, and a few others.

In the Tempest, Caliban remains on the island, as I recall.

Good luck!

I voted for Black Anvil and Grim Ledger, and of the two I like Grim Ledger a bit more. The dark overtones/negative connotations/etc. don't really bother me, but the rest of the names on the list sound somewhat juvenile. Sorry if that's a bit harsh, but it was the first thing that struck me about the list and I thought it was worth mentioning.

Grim Ledger and Black Anvil I can take seriously, in the context of a gaming company, and they're neat. ;)

No problem Haiiro - every opinion counts. We have thick skin and can take constructive comments, be they positive or negative. We wanted to tap into the pulse of the gaming community and see what names invoked a response so that when the time comes we'll choose the best name for a company. So thanks for taking the time to reply...

Regards,
Scott

actually...

I think Black Anvil sounds pretty cool.

I'm also new to this business. I chose Reality Deviants Publications for our company name.

Best of luck to you! :)
