New Confessions: The Down & Under Adventurer

Comparing that to the Movie version of the LotR Lembas is like comparing Excalibur to a rusty meat cleaver. Yeah hardtack seems to be a baked good and might last long enough to seem of elf manufacture, but it sure ain't magically filling. Though it might seem magically hardened if you don't soak it first.

I don't see anything about this journeybread being "magically filling" or "spiritually sustaining" like lembas, so unless there's some other information available which states that it functions as such, then it is no different than hardtack (which is rather filling, if hard to get through).

Re: sunrods.

I love the idea of a non magical, portable flare that an adventurer could pull out in an emergency.

I dislike the idea of adventurers carrying crates of non magical, portable flares that light up vast amounts of space, and are the adventurers essentially permanent light source.

If sunrods illuminated a 10' radius, while torches or lanterns illuminated 30', this would work for me just fine. Then everyone would carry a lantern, and if something went wrong or they were separated from the group, they'd pull out their sunrod backup. I like the mental image of an adventurer, lost in total darkness, striking a smoky, burning flare against a rock, and holding it up to help them peer into the shadows surrounding them.

Re: Journeybread

Who the heck cares?

I personally am including a variation of a glowstick in my game, just need to work out the literal in-game mechanics of how it works and its place alongside my electric-torches.

Interestingly, W&M kind of addresses this issue. Instead of pitch-black dungeons that require the PCs to carry light sources in, you can have inbuilt light sources: glowing fungus, rivers of lava, cascades of radiant energy, glowing crystalline veins, etc etc. I did something similar for ages.

Though pitch darkness can be nice for certain parts of gameplay, to get a certain atmosphere across, ie: Pitch Black wouldn't work with ambient light :P

On the other token though, I am really tempted to have my PCs fall through a hole that opens up around them. They only have limited supplies for light, but when they finally do go the whole cave-system they have been travelling through lights up with phosphorescent fungus.
