New Confessions: The Down & Under Adventurer

FireLance

Legend
Key humor highlights:

1. Obviously photoshopped picture of crocodile biting Shelly's head
2. Shelly is scared of French tourists with butter knives

Key scoop highlights:

1. Heward's handy haversack may be in the PH
2. Climbing may be folded into Athletics
3. A staff of defense is a magical implement that may also be in the PH, and gives +1 to AC. Makes me wonder how many other exceptions there are to the principle that only items in the clothing/armor slot affect AC which was hinted at in the magic items article.
4. Hippogriffs may be purchased for 1000 gp.

Heh, with names (and gender) changed, that article could've been about me travelling :)

Anyways, the thing that caught my eye: "[...]I’d gain a +1 to my Armor Class (which right now is -3 thanks to a wind resistant jacket and a couple year’s worth of kickboxing classes – and yes, -3 is an improvement)" (emphasis mine).

So, are we going to see an AD&D-like AC system, with negative bonuses and positive penalties. A staff of defence +1 that actually gives a -1 bonus to AC? :)

That was probably another poor attempt at humor. Seriously, she really needs to tone it down and treat her writings as an article, not her own personal blog.

Anyhow, it seems that 4e soon will see the same inluxofmagic item clutter that littered previous editions, espexially 3e.

At least it looks like it will be easier to get rid of the items if you really want to in 4e.

Really? I didn't see it that way at all.

To my mind, if the wizard gets specific utility out of magic weapons than that eliminates the problem of staves and wands as whole categories of magic items that were distinct in their own right.

This is slimming down the catalog.

When it comes to packing and outdoors, I'm a little bit like her too! :p

About the armor class, I think she meant her (Shelly's) AC is so low, that even with armor (wind resistant jacket) she only improved it to -3.

She only mentioned one magic item (the staff), the others were preety much basic adventurer gear, something I never cared for (as player and DM, since 1E), but wouldn't want OUT of the books - even if they bog down the game, there's so much you can take out without compromising believability. ;)

Well, I'm no specialist in journalism, but I think she doesn't write articles per se. She's got a column, and she should be able to write anyway she wants to. It's not for everyone (grab a newspaper/magazine, read some columns, might like some, might hate some).

And even without much (any?) crunch, I enjoyed it. :)

Gosh, negative much?

As you can see from this thread alone, there are more than a few of us who enjoy Mazzanoble's writing and appreciate the column.

If you don't, that's cool, but no need to be insulting about it.

Oh wait, this is the internet . . . . forgot, sorry. Keep right on unfairly trashing a successful writer's style . . .

She wears chucks! Good deal.

Even I might balk at testing them against Monsoons.

Having worn a pair in Monsoon season in Australia, I can tell you that it's rather difficult. Not impossible, mind you, and they do dry out quickly, but still rather not easy.
