New cover art for the Revised PHB and DMG?

JUSTIN SWEET ALL THE WAY!

For me, Justin Sweet seems to fit everyone´s needs in here.

Exceptionally astounding art, as seen on Magic of Faerun and Silver Marches covers, and many other book´s inside illustrations.

And...

If you check his website, I bet many of you will be satisfied with the way his characters look, for their armor and weapons are a mix of fantasy and realism/functionality.

Did I mention his work is just plain wonderful?

besides this guy, I really like Tony Diterlizzi (who doesn´t?), Todd Lockwood and Wayne Reynolds.

PS: And I like the distinguishing new style of the covers better.

Gah, I appear to be the only one who likes the new style. I think the "mystic tome" look of the new books is very refreshing...

You're not alone, amigo. I like the idea of the 'tome look' too. I'm not too keen on the MM & MMII however. I thought the CC was better.

Death to the "dungeon-punk" style of character art. Weapons, armor and shields look as they do for a reason- it's functional!

I couldn't agree with you more. I hate the patchy, spikey, pouchy, stitchy, buckles look. It's so un-D&D. Yuck!

While I don't care much for the "dungeon punk" new art, and have a great deal of nostalgia for the old 1e art and covers, I have to say that I think they should probably stick with similar interior art, and some sort of "neutral" cover. Personally, I really like the "tome" look and feel of the PHB and DMG -- returning to the original 1e DMG cover style would probably hurt marketing.

I don't. His work has occasional brilliance, but otherwise is largely very cartoony.

So un-D&D? What exactly is the D&D look, anyway? To me, that look just screams D&D -- that and all the bad fantasy b-movies wardrobe departments, that are very much in the same vein.

Sorry, OT...

Just a needed off-topic "hi"

Hello Illuminae. ;)

Hope you had a good Chritsmas and new year's eve/day.

If you ever need any more D&D-related articles, just let me know. :)

I have to come out on the "Pro-Tome" side of the debate. I feel that the look of those books gives it an air of mystery, and a hint of realism. It wasn't until the 3E PHB cover that I really sat up and took notice of the cover of my gaming materials! Most other of my previous D&D materials I just flipped right past the cover and straight into the material; but the PHB, DMG, and Monster manual you can marvel for a long time at the intricacies of those photo-covers. Henry Higgenbotham really did those up right.

I think the Dragonlance module series covers by Larry Elmore was the only work I've admired as much.
