So far in this group, I'm the only one that still plays races and classes out of the PHB. The only one. Is this epidemic, or is this just my group? Sometimes I just want WotC to stop putting out new crap to entice the powergamer's.

This is sort of a contradiction. If your fellow players were really powergamers (competent ones anyway), they would all be Human Clerics, Druids, and Wizards.

It sounds more like they just enjoy trying out new rules, etc.

The DM needs to set his foot down. First off, he's probably being swamped with requests and rather than reviewing them for balance he lets everything go.
He most likely doesn't have the time to review every little class, prestige class, feat, spell, and item to see if its twinktastic. Also, considering that today's halfling shugenja is tomorrow's deep dwarf frenzied berserker he thinks it doesn't matter because it will change anyhow. Ask for a penalty to starting funds and experience for ADD and the problem will disappear. Because what power gaming twink, excuse me, "optimization minded gestalt role/rollplayer" would want to be 10K back in GP and XP and down a feat and/or skill points?

If the DM simply imposes a "well, your new character will be one level lower than the average level of the group" rule, your surviving character will quickly become the highest-level around, while everyone else will essentially play your cohorts and hirelings. At some point, they'll realize that's lame and will start sticking to their guns a little longer.

Nah, I won't necessarily fault the group. By nature, they want to have the best and exciting character to play with, and so they will look for new stuff that even the DM doesn't even own nor have read. But ultimately it's up to the DM to put a cork on it.

If I were the DM, and a player "resign" his allegedly "lame" character, I'd recycle it (as NPC), study it, and find a way to get back at the players and make him or her regret losing the character in the first place.

But just so you know, I'm cruel and sadistic. I will backdoor anyone just to teach a simple lesson.

Nah, I won't necessarily fault the group. By nature, they want to have the best and exciting character to play with, and so they will look for new stuff that even the DM doesn't even own nor have read. But ultimately it's up to the DM to put a cork on it.

Conversely I, as stated above, will fault the group first. Playing fun and exciting characters is one of the joys of the game, but a character doesn't become any the less exciting just because it doesn't possess something newly published.

That being said, I agree completely that the DM should, as you say, put a cork in it. I just think the players shouldn't put the DM in a situation where he has to do so.

So, in our recent games, we've been having a LOT of walk offs. "This character is lame... he walks off." Everyone in the group does it. Next week, a new gathering of characters show up, with all new races, and all new classes, courtesy of "Player's Handbook II" or "Complete Munchkin" or somesuch. Now that 9 Swords is out, I imagine half our group will be switching characters again.
