New D&D Aide Product (at least to me...)

No offense intended to anyone, but what does this do that a sheet of laminated drafting paper doesn't?
Shrink down to 10x10x2, for one thing. Speaking as someone who has run a game at a convention, that's a plus. Being able to store a game map in a backpack is a big plus. Being able to rearrange the map so it doesn't fit to the exact dimensions of the big map is nice, as is being able to add and remove sections that aren't in play, without redrawing the whole map. I don't always have the hugest game tables in the world, so being able to reconfigure the map size is also a plus.

I'm seriously considering getting a set or two. It looks very nice.

D'oh!!

I've been wanting a game mat for about two years. I was making due because I didn't really like any of them. I finally broke down and got a double-sided Chessex mat on sale about two months ago. Hadn't seen or heard of these.

If I hadn't paid so much for the Chessex I'd like to get these. Bummer. Using dry erase would be SO nice. I've usually got about half a roll of inked up paper towel in a bag next to my chair at the end of a game session and my "gameday" little bottle of windex with me all the time.

Neowolf, your idea would work too; there are several options for miniature gaming. However, laminated paper will eventually crease and wear out, and if you have a large piece of paper I'm sure it has to be rolled up to transport, which means the map will not lay flat. Also, the modularity of Tact-Tiles allows the action of the game to continue in a timely fashion should the game run off the map. If you have an odd shaped dungeon, the Tact-Tiles can make custom shapes too.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not knocking your idea, or anyone elses for that matter. I own a mega mat, and collect Dwarven Forge sets too. We just had a vision and wanted to share it with the gaming community. As stated earlier, not every product is perfect; some will enjoy our product, others may like to use other methods. Whatever enhances your enjoyment of gaming, that is all that matters!

Done.

Hrm. Just noticed you guys are from Alabama (Huntsville?).

I just graduated from Auburn during the summer. Currently at Miami University in Ohio getting my MA.

Very cool.

Yea, their address says Huntsville. Thats cool, they're not too far away from me!

You guys need another player? :p

...Question...
How well do these things hold the marker? In other words, how easy does it wipe off? Of course I want it to be easy to clean when it comes time to clean it, but how well would my map hold up over several weeks of transport back and forth from games and in and out of the case?

My experience with dry-erase is that it comes up with the slightest touch. My players tend to take two or three months (games are every other week) to clear a sizeable dungeon. Will these hold up to the task?

I've always used the chessex maps. In fact I have three of them now (mega hex, battle hex, and mega square). I would be really interested to see a non-biased comparison of the two...

The Tact-Tiles will hold a mark very well, especially if you use the Expo Bold, and do not erase as easily as regular white boards, however, it does come up easier than the wet erase. I have had the same map on my Tiles for 3 weeks now. When I take them out of the box, occasionally I have to do some touch up. The longer you leave the dry erase ink on the Tiles, the harder it is to wipe up, but without staining. We recommend using a dry erase cleaner if you leave the map drawn for several weeks. The Tiles are coated, not laminated, therefore they WILL NOT STAIN, even if you have left the ink on for an extended period! We personally guarantee it (providing you use only dry erase markers...Sharpie's are right out!)!

We have used Windex on our tiles instead of Dry Erase Cleaner, and it worked just fine.

One helpful hit; if you use the Expo Bold marker, use the low odor version if you do not want everyone high off the fumes....LOL. If you order the TTK-002 (the expanded kit) you will receive a low odor bold marker.

Thanks, and keep the questions coming.

Interesting...

Seems like a nice solution for conventions when I have to leave my Drawers o' Dungeon(TM) at home.

I'm not willing take that big of a hit on shipping though - have you folks lined up a distributor yet? If Alliance carried them I would buy them in a second.

Thanks.

Use babywipes instead. That way you only have to have a box of those, rather than paper towls and the bottle of windex.

Plus, if you have a baby, they're convenient. :D
