D&D 5E (2014) New D&D Survey, with some in-depth setting questions

Yeah I found it odd too but forgot that the Starter Set may have come out in July but iirc the PHB came out in August 2014

It was a progressive launch if the Edition radiating out from core stores at the start of July.

I dunno, the most "generic" Settings seem to have an aggressive product sell already written up internally at WotC based on these options. Greyhawk, Birthright, and Mystara particularly seem like very strong and well developed arguments for genre distinctives.

Greyhawk was swords & sorcery. Birthright was warfare and domain management. Mystara was a gonzo cluster@#$% kitchen sink. That's not really a genre.

Even the Realms gets some distinctiveness in for robustness and flexibility, although Greyhawk does get in on the former, although it's definitely well below the Realms in robustness. Maybe that's why I like them both, I like lots of detail to hang campaign ideas from...

I dunno, I would say it is definitely a genre, perhaps even a mood, and I like it when you phrase it thst way.

Thing is, WotC is leaning hard I Settings, and this very much feels like active product research to refine a proposal.

I find it hilarious that 5E came out in August 2014 but the survey only let me choose months 1-7 when asking when I started playing.

They're checking to see who was in on the Alpha playtest. I was but I forget what months that was, since it's been seven years.

My three were Dark Sun, Mystara, and Spelljammer. It took me about 30 minutes to decide which one to do the survey for. Still not sure it was the right call.

The main thing I get from the Realms here is that they have spent energy to figure out what makes it tick, and how it is different from these other generic Settings. Thing is, generic Settings do have an intrinsic appeal because we know the most popular Settong is "Homebrew, borrowing from published products." Exandria, Forgotten Tealms, Greyhawk, Mystara, etc. aren't in strict competition in the realm of homebrew building blocks.
