New Doctor Who RPG...

As much as I'm a huge Doctor Who fan, I question whether you can really have a continuing campaign focused around the current Doctor himself. He's really not so much a man as a god. (Or as people described Gandalf, a plot device.) If he is involved, the entire play group would be relegated to henchmen or audience surrogates.

I'm hoping this game allows the focus to be more on the stories of the earlier incarnations of the Doctor. They were a lot more like people. (Well, some of them anyway.)

I couldn't really find any detailed information or reviews. If anyone finds any, please post a link.

I'm also wondering if the game has enough options to it that you could run a Torchwood type game. That strikes me as something easier to do with an ensemble cast. (Assuming no one gets to play Jack.)

When I talked to the Cubicle 7 people while waiting for the ENnies to start about Starblazers, they kept bringing up how they looked to emphasize the "fun" of sci fi, etc...

So I am pretty sure that whatever decisions they have made in their game design for this was also geared with "fun" being the foremost goal.

If anything the blurb reads like one of the players can be the same "race" as the Doctor, but there is definitely a lack of info about exactly how these rules are set up for play. I probably should go to Cubicle 7's website and see what they say there.

Oh no, another example of the Tyranny of Fun?

I guess I will have to check it out some time. Or at least have EN Worlders hunt reviews or post their own. (And by have them do it, I wait for it to happen.)

I am not aware of a 'tyranny of fun', but I do have to agree I know many more players that would want to be a 'star' then a 'supportting cast memeber'... and we ran into this in the buffy game. I like the idea of angel, and buffy, spike and wesly being PCs, even later sesons willow...but almost no one wants to be zander...

In a Dr Who game I would LOVE to see stats for time lords and other cool characters... but to remeber micky "I don't want to be a robot dog"...

Well, if you read the players preview I link above they have it set up where you do travel around with the Doctor, and you can play characters from the shows, and even have a player BE Doctor Who...

OR

*GASP*

You can make up totally new PC's who can travel around with the Doctor, and have the Doctor be under GM control...

OR

You can make up PC's who used to travel around with the Doctor but now stay on Earth, or other location, to continue the battle against a foe, or foes, who need constant attention...

OR

Do a campaign based on PC's who fight against the enemies of Doctor Who but have never met the Doctor yet, if ever.

So it sounds like you will only be "pigeon holed" if you want to be. Otherwise, you can play out any and every cool idea you have ever had about the Doctor Who universe.

played it when C7 demo'd it at a con

6 players and NPC doctor

it was fun, but no more so than any other game

Dr was played well, and somewhat peripheral, which is howm it should be
