Late? WtF?
[rant]I really, deeply, truly don't understand all the whining about Dungeon being late.
If my daily newspaper is not at the house by 6:00 am on any given day, then I'm not gonna have a chance to read it before I leave for work. And by the time I get home I'll have already gotten my news fix via the internet or radio. So a late newspaper is essentially worthless to me unless I feel like doing the crossword puzzle that day. So if my newspaper is consistently late by a couple of hours, that's worth complaining about.
If my copy of Newsweek, which normally arrives on Tuesday, arrives on a Wednesday or a Thursday, well, it doesn't matter too much because most of the articles have useful background or contextual info that make them still worth reading even a couple of days after the fact. So not much lost value there. If the Newsweek arrives a whole week late, then most of the articles have gotten unacceptably stale and the magazine has lost considerable value. So if the Newsweek is consistently late by a week or so, that also is worth complaining about.
But if my copy of Dungeon is a couple of days late, or a couple of weeks late, or for that matter even a couple of months late, what does it really matter? What value is lost in having it before the 10th or before the 20th? I'm not sure I even understand what late means when we're talking about Dungeon. So what if the game store down the street has a copy before you? It's not like there's an expiration date on adventures. It's not like rival DMs are gonna poach your players because they get copies of Dungeon 3 days before you do. And it's not like other streams of quality d20 material aren't readily available over the internet or in our local game stores. Man, I don't think I've even read all the stuff from last December's Dungeon issue yet.
If you miss issues, or if your copy arrives damaged, or if we are talking about issues being consistently late BY MONTHS, then I would say those are all perfectly legitimate beefs. And it certainly sounds like lots of subscribers outside the US have had problems like that. But I really can't muster any sympathy for a subscriber whose issue is only a couple of days or weeks late.[/rant]
