New Edition of RuneQuest

Ah, good, I'd been hoping that it would reappear, but...it's too bad Chaosium isn't handling what was, at one time, its flagship game.

I never got a chance to see the first edition of this game; I got it when Avalon Hill was handling it. Many RQ fans said the AH version was not much like the original. I've often heard the original version spoken of as being somehow better, but I've never heard any specifics. Apparently it was tied much more closely to the setting of Glorantha than later iterations.

Anyway, I'm glad to see that some of the great games of the past are making a comeback - WarHammer being another.

RQ1 and RQ2 were less generic than Avalon Hill's RQ3. The system was taylored to Gloranth, RQ3 had a fantasy Erope as its setting, not bad, but not what long time RQ fans wanted.

RQ3 also suffered from some of the lowest production values in gaming - bad illustrations (aside from the box cover), paper (not cardstock) covers, rotten world map.

And for the time horribly over priced (back when GW belonged to itself rather than to their miniatures company they had reviews in White Dwarf, and the one for RQ complained about the price... given GWs more recent prices there is a touch of irony there...)

The changes to the RQ systems weren't bad, aside from stripping out the Glorantha flavor. Over all I would say that they were an improvement.

I will at least look at RQ4.

The Auld Grump, feelin' Auld...

The immersion in Glorantha was a glorious thing for RQ. It was a fantastic ancient world with loads of new takes on old things. The way they did the Troll race was the best.

I had bought the AH version but never used it, it just wasn't what I wanted. My RQ group broke up around that time and I never got another one going, other games took our time and then D&D was improved and that is what I'm playing mainly now.

This will be something to check out. :)

with Mongoose asking for fan input it sounds more of a more away from the old games, god I have to hurry up and put my vote in for no howards!

'Tis true, the Duck Question is proving contentious. . .

I would have thought that Ducks would be tied to the world of Glorantha, so... would you be able to use such a thing? I'd assume it would be some version of the old RQ ruleset rather than also including the world of Glorantha?

I might look at it but without Glorantha - to me - it's not RQ, it's just another rules system.

I'd say leave in the ducks. They're part of RuneQuest's history & charm. Those that can't stand them can ignore them in their own games(as many did) just like gnomes in D&D(as many do).

I wonder if they are using any of the 4e rules that were written by Jovanovic, McGloin, and Fink? I have a playtest copy, but obviously the book never made it to market.
