New Feat: Fate Casting

Stalker0

Legend
Fate Casting [General]
You give up focus in your spells to hopefully gain the favor of fate.
Prereq: Ability to cast spells.
Benefit: When casting a spell, the caster may choose to make the DC 1d20 + ability mod + spell level.
Normal: Normally a spell's DC is 10 + ability mod + spell level.

This feat is designed to give mages the same flexibility as psionics do now, however, the reason its a feat is because the mage can choose when to use fate casting and when to cast the normal way.

Seems reasonable - Grants a risky but reasonable chance of a boost.

Personally, I would give that power to certain individual who are tied with chaos. I'm thinking of wild mage or Xaocitech. I know wild mage have been remade in 3rd edition, but I only remember the impression I had when I read it... it had lost all his flavor, but giving that "power" and having something like:

-If you roll X on your DC dice, something goes wrong... (don't remember the name of the magical chaos that you had to roll)... roll a d100 or d1000 to see the effect.

I think it would do great wild mage.

So, give it to some really chaotic creature/caster, that my opinion.

Ohh... I would forget, it is pretty fine feat if you decide to include it in a campaign.

Cool feat, but it seems like it needs to be rounded out just a bit to make it really worthwhile...but I don't have any ideas. :)

This is a great idea!

However - since, on average, your caster will be getting a lower DC just as much as a higher DC, I don't see any real benefit to taking this feat (as KReynolds has already said). Normally, a feat should provide a benefit.

Perhaps you should consider this a character option at first level that is chosen once and cannot be undone? This way, you could have someone who wishes to play the "agent of chaos" type of character won't have to waste a feat in order to do this.

Or the feat might allow them to adjust the die roll by +/- 1 or 2 (only recommended if you use Spell Focus as +2) if they choose to roll.

We used to roll the DC as in your feat. It is IIRC a variant rule in the DMG.
We skiped it, because it slowed us down.
Also it didn`t change anything.
I wouldn`t take the feat as Spellcaster. You have 7 feats + 4 Bonus (Metamagic) feats thats awfull little.
But it is balanced. Maybe a bit underpowered. (Even if you say roll of 20: no save, roll of 1 :No save eiter :D )

May I post this feat on my site?

Also, there is a slight advantage to taking this feat. In situations where the opponent save would always beat your DC, this feat would give you a chance to beat his save.
I just saw your site.
Nice.
But .....
you didn`t asked me to use my feat, or did ya mate?
Not even a "Created by."

(Rank & File) btw

Last I checked, he doesn't ask. He simply posts the info on his site, expecting you to go look for your info and ask him to take it down. It's been a while though, so I could be mistaken.

Go here for more info. Although, he's at least asking here.
