Well, it needs to be a class from the PHB. Favored classes that one has to buy a book to be able to use is just not a good thing. With the suprise lack of the Illusionist option, I'll stay with Bard.

Rerun This Poll

Hey, after you get a few more responses, shut down this poll and rerun it, trimmed to the top 5 or 10 choices. The full list provided here is pretty darn ridiculous and distracting. ... And include Wizard-specialist (Illusionist) as a choice this time.

The thing about Illusionist is that it never really was its own class, when it was introduced it was like Magic-User but with a stripped-down spell list and no 8th- or 9th-level spells. It was a true waste of time. In 2e it was better, because specialist wizards really got something for specializing, but I still think it's whacked to assign a specific class option as a favored class; a bit like saying that dwarves' favored class is "fighter, with Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization for the battleaxe." Pfft.

Gnomes were originally elementals which lived in the earth and guarded its hidded treasures. Sounds like their focus should be more connected with protection and earth magic. I'm voting Sorcerer, but Ranger is a close second.

I don't like Sorcerer as a favored class for elves, at least for core PHB elves; a class that studies magic seems to me to fit them better than spontaneous high-power low-versatility fantasy X-Men.

[btw, I *strongly* dislike Gnomes as represented in the core rules, and in every setting for D&D I've come across. . . except Dark Sun ;)]
Harsh. Me, I can't see saying that the best representation for a given race is in a setting that lacks it completely... That's just not necessary. And if that's what you're going to do, you're dissing Birthright. ;)

Cheers,

Well, the problem is that they keep putting the cool classes in splatbooks. What they really ought to do is release one giant, comprehensive Class Compendium in future editions (and having said that, I'm sure that someone's eyes will light up with dollar signs and the idea will actually be considered.)

There are too many these days to fit into a single standard-format book. You'd have to put the most popular classes into the first Class Compandium, and put all the rest into a second Class Compendium, for later delivery.

A waste of time? Something a lot of people don't understand about first edition is that the lack of 8th and 9th level spells for clerics, druids, and illusionists was not a penalty - it was a bonus. Maze is a 5th level spell for an illusionist, yet an 8th level spell for a magic user. That means an illusionist gets it at 9th level vs 15th for a magic user. plus there were some spells a plain 'ol wizard NEVER got like alter reality. The illusionist may not be to everyone's taste, but it was FAR from a waste of time. In fact, I'd bet it ranks as one of the most favorite classes among old school AD&D players.
