He probably starts to feel the sleep effects clouding his mind, and he shakes himself and concentrates his willpower to shake it off, while focusing his thoughts to the battle?

Forget about magic being the instant-I-win-button, or the Save-or-die-effect that is so much hated by everybody. Everybody's equally good somehow, and everybody has a chance to be badass. :)

knight's move is a paladin spell from the spell compendium. Almost the exact same thing. It looks like they are reusing some of their best ideas from late 3.5e. My first character was going to be a paladin but the warlord is really starting to impress me...

It might be better to say that they tested some powers and design elements for 4e in late 3.5.

That has nothing to do with a stance, though.

It can be, jif you interpret the fighter's defensive stance to look out for debilitating status ailments, as he's keeping his wits together, and keeping eye sharp on everybody and everything, like the enemy wizard casting the sleep spell, or the rogue who throws a flaming grenade at him.

Just use your imagination. Should be easy to evoke the image of a guy who is posturing himself to enemy attack, and being able to somehow wake up faster because prior, he tried to fight it off violently when hit by Sleep.

That's a big stretch. It's easier to say the stance is magical.

Why is it a big stretch for you? For me, it's quite normal and believable.

Must be because I watched Anime and Cartoons and read Manga and Sword&Sorcery novels (Conan), I guess. :D

Me too, can you give me an example of a character using a defensive martial stance to avoid magical effects? It would help a lot.
