Well, I was in agreement with your point, so I'm not sure where that leaves us. I'd like to see Wizards simply out-compete other VTT platforms. I don't think they're going to do that. I don't think they will continue their licenses with Roll20, et al.

The ‘Disney does not leave its movies on Netflix, now that they have Disney+’ sounded to me like the normal thing for WotC to do would be to remove D&D from other VTTs

If the AI is learning from the players in the right way, I might subscribe just to see if I can join with a group to push the tactical boundaries and see what we can train it to do. (Use counterspells a lot? Always use killing blows on downed characters? Anti-magic shell for you and you and you? Lie all the time?)

We fed an AI dozens of murderhobo PCs and asked it to write a module. It wrote the Tomb of Horrors.

Um...maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Do you think WotC will maintain their licensing agreement with Roll20 once their VTT is up and running?

Interesting. So it would almost have to be a separate instance of the AI for each user otherwise the trained-in-tactics AI would murderize the players in for the roleplay. But that clearly wouldn’t work for groups. My AI is trained in bad jokes and Monty Python references and a little wargaming but yours is an old-school adversarial and killer DM bot...

Well, I just say that because I like my D&D the old fashioned way ... I earn it.

Oh, wait, no. I just enjoy the tech-free time. Books and pencils and physical rolling of dice and the hanging with friends in person. So there is, quite literally, almost nothing I can imagine, even free, that would make me use the VTT. To me, D&D is in-person social time.

We're on the same page there. Maybe even in the same paragraph.

Honestly, I have better uses of my time if it's not going to be in-person. But I also understand that there are a lot of people, that aren't me, that this doesn't apply to. Just like I will never, ever, ever watch someone else playing D&D or a videogame on twitch, yet I know for a fact that there are people that love that.

I tried. I really did, but I couldn't make it through even one episode of Critical Role. The one time I did watch and enjoy people playing D&D was live at a venue that Lost Odyssey was playing at, and then only because my old DM was in the show and he comped me the ticket. Live was kinda like a play, and I've seen worse plays than what I saw up on that stage. It was enjoyable.

I'm surprisingly optimistic about D&D and AIs.
I mean, haven't we all had our game mastering situations where we felt a bit like the old Eliza bot:

"So you're saying you want to steal the Duke's underpants?"
"Is it because of your childhood that you want to steal the Duke's underpants?"

And, heck, ChatGPT would crush a "rulings, not rules" setup.

Wait -- for $30/mo could I create a character and have the AI DM run me through solo adventures?

Or do I have to at least create a party of 4? This would be a bit tricky to run them all, but I could focus on one character as the main hero and the other 3 as just minions/sidekicks.

This could be an interesting way to play when I'm home sick/alone/tired of other people.
