Hah! People here were speculating which monster could be on the cover, and it did seem like the beholder and mimic were the top two picks. But here's WotC just going, "Why not both?" Plus a displacer beast, a gelatinous cube, what're probably kraken tentacles, and whatever the toothy guy in the lower right is.

That looks like Dynaheir the Wychlaren of Rashemen, Minsc the Berserker, and his companion Boo, the Miniature Giant Space Hamster from the original Baldur's Gate 1 game!

*GarrettKP and Ibrandul! Great catch on the caster being Vajra Safahr, the current Blackstaff of Waterdeep. It being Dynaheir was wishful thinking, but I'm not mad.

Art looks a lot better this edition than last. 5E's art got better across the edition and now it seems SERIOUS.

All sorts of D&D specific monsters from the beholder to the mimic. Back has a lot of fun things as well, modrons, illithid, owlbear, dryad and an intellect devourer. Kind of surprised dragons weren't a little better represented, although I agree the eye is probably a dragon.
