D&D (2024) New One D&D Playtest Document: 77 Pages, 7 Classes, & More!

There's a brand new playtest document for the new (version/edition/update) of Dungeons of Dragons available for download! This one is an enormous 77 pages and includes classes, spells, feats, and weapons.

In this new Unearthed Arcana document for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, we explore material designed for the next version of the Player’s Handbook. This playtest document presents updated rules on seven classes: Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, and Rogue. This document also presents multiple subclasses for each of those classes, new Spells, revisions to existing Spells and Spell Lists, and several revised Feats. You will also find an updated rules glossary that supercedes the glossary of any previous playtest document.

Weren't they reviving The Raven Queen Patron in Planescape? That was the alternative shadow Warlock concept in the UAs for Xanathar's Guide, ultimately rejected in favour of Hexblade. I feel like Nera as a Patron (and ONLY Nera, no other shadowfell entities) is far too limited a concept, though metal as heck, but if so then they wouldn't really need another Shadowfell subclass for now…
Nope, the only Subclass remaining that was tested for 2023 is the Fate Cleric, not clear if that was for Planescape or the Deck of Many Things.

Has there been actual confirmation that the subclasses we are seeing are the ones that will be in the PHB? Almost feels like some of them are there to playtest Class compatibility with older subclasses.
Yup, Crawford said explicitly in the livestream that the Tasha's Subclasses referenced but not included will be reprinted in the PHB. Barring some radical angry reaction, these are the PHB Subclasses.

So to my mind the problem with 5e spellcasting abilities, from an accessibility standpoint, is that they subtly work differently for each class, but get described in a mostly boilerplate several paragraphs of text, such that someone reading the entries for multiple classes for the first time (like someone trying to choose the class for their first character) just skips the descriptions of "Spellcasting" after the first such entry. My first 5e group got 4 levels in before we realized the Warlock could get spells back on a short rest, because even though that is the core mechanic of the class it is not really presented as such.

Torturing "prepared" spells as a concept so thoroughly that it can now encompass the spellcasting method formerly known as "memorized" spells just makes the issue worse.

Note that the issue is entirely one of presentation. They simply need a "bullet points of how X class's spellcasting is different from that of others", approach to presenting spellcasting, rather than the "long reptitious discussion for clever eyes to spot the minor variations in" approach they seem married to.

Seriously? This infuriates me. You can't conjure something out of existence.
Conjuration isn't strictly "bring something to you" anymore. Here is the 2014 description:

Conjuration spells involve the transportation of objects and creatures from one location to another. Some spells summon creatures or objects to the caster’s side, whereas others allow the caster to teleport to another location. Some conjurations create objects or effects out of nothing.

I bet it will be updated in the 2024 book to clarify that it can send things away too.

Note that Banishment isn't Abjuration anymore. It's Conjuration now. Abjuration is becoming more along the lines of "use positive energy to ward from harm," which is opposite of Necromancy, that "uses negative energy to inflict your will on the world."

Seriously? This infuriates me. You can't conjure something out of existence.

Banishment doesn't put anything "out if existence," it shuffles around their location.
