New PrC-The Peddler of Death

Peddler of Death

“I see you’re looking for something, something special,” The merchant behind the booth grinned with a half-full smile to his latest customer, a man dressed well enough to befit a wealthy figure, “How may I be of service?.”

“You’re right,” the man started, “I’m looking for something special for my daughter, in fact. It’s her birthday tomorrow and I wanted to get her something…unique, and the stores on this block don’t seem to have what I’m looking for, I’m afraid my daughter is very picky.”

“Well, I think I have just the cure for that. Give me just one moment.” The vendor continues with a smile as he ducks below the booth, reappearing a moment later with a beautifully crafted doll, eyes as bright as emeralds and in a gown similar to that a princess would wear.

”It’s perfect.” The customer said, while getting out his purse, “How much do I owe you?”

“No charge,” The merchant replied, packaging the doll carefully and handing it to the man, “Just tell her happy birthday from me.”

As his customer mumbles his thanks and walks away, the merchant smiles more broadly under the cover of his illusion, After all, it will be her last one. As another customer approached, looking at his wares, he perked up, “You seem to be looking for something special, how may I be of service?”

Class Features
The following are class features of the Peddler of Death prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A Peddler of Death gains no new weapon or armor proficiencies.
Spells Per Day/Spells Known: At each Peddler level, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if she had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which she belonged before adding the prestige class level. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If the character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a Peddler of Death, the player must decide to which class to add each Peddler level for the purpose of determining spells per day and spells known.
Imbue Token (Su): The Peddler may imbue a token (any item of size tiny or smaller) with a necromantic spell of the listed level. The amount of time required to imbue this token is the same as that required to cast the spell in question. Imbuing a spell into an object in this fashion expends a memorized spell, or an unused spell slot as if the Peddler had cast the spell himself. After the spell is imbued, the Peddler may sell or give it to someone who accepts it willingly in turn without any magical compulsion (simply handing it to them will not work, they must acknowledge it first), when this happens, the deal is sealed, and within ten minutes (Peddler's choice as to the exact time, minimum of 1 minute) after the target has accepted the token, the spell’s effect takes place (it’s DC is as if cast directly by the Peddler himself).
Spells that require a touch or ranged touch hit automatically, but the item must be in the target's immediate possession (such as a backpack, or even a bag of holding), or it's effect is discharged harmlessly. Spells with an area effect use the target as it's center of effect. If the target survives the spell, he must make a Wisdom check (DC 10+Peddler of Death level) to realize that the spell’s effect came from the token.
An Imbued Token not given to anyone lasts for only 1 hour per Peddler level before its enchantment fades away, but if it’s given to another person before then, its duration lasts as long as it’s contingency’s (see the Contingent Trigger ability, below), if any.
Poison Use: Peddlers of Death are trained in the use of poison and never risk accidentally poisoning themselves when applying poison to a blade.
Contingent Trigger: The effects of an Imbued Token normally take affect immediately after the token is accepted. Upon gaining his 2nd level in this class, the Peddler may choose to have the item’s effect discharge at a later time or upon meeting a certain condition within that time (similar to the contingency spell), for up to 1 hour per Peddler of Death level, but no sooner than within 1 minute, however, when using this ability, the Peddler of Death may only use a spell of the next lower level that he has the ability to imbue (A 2nd level Peddler of Death may only use this ability with cantrips, for example). Upon reaching 5th level, this time period extends to up to 1 day per Peddler of Death level, although using this limits the Peddler of Death to a spell of the next 2 lower levels that he has the ability to imbue (A 5th level Peddler of Death may only use this ability with 2nd level spells, for example). Finally, upon reaching 8th level this time period extends to up to 1 week per Peddler of Death level., although when using this ability, the Peddler of Death may only use a spell of the next 3 lower levels that he has the ability to imbue. The item must be on the person’s immediate possession when the trigger occurs, otherwise the item’s effect is harmlessly discharged as normal. If the target gives the item to another person within the contingency’s time, and the other person accepts it willingly-without any enchantment, as Imbue Token, the token will inflict its curse upon the new owner instead.
Sympathetic Object (Sp): The Peddler of Death may cast sympathy once per day (this increases to 2x/day at 6th level, and finally 3x/day at 9th level) upon any Imbued Token as a spell-like ability as a sorcerer equal to his primary caster level. Unlike other enchantments, this ability bypasses the restriction on Imbue Token when considering what is a willing target or not.
Death in a Box (Su): At 10th level the Peddler of Death has achieved a grim mastery of the art of killing through his tokens. If the Peddler of Death chooses, he may imbue up to two different spells in the same token, and if he chooses, with one contingency per effect. (Example, a Peddler of Death might choose to imbue a token with a Finger of Death spell, contingent on when the target returns home, as well as a Create Greater Undead spell, contingently taking effect on the night after the target is buried)

Very cool, but very specialized. Unfortunately, it's another case of full spell progression every level AND cool stuff every level. IMHO, that means that it's too powrful.

A spell casting LV and abilities too powerful? No. Just as a fighter prestige class can progress with a "power or ability" per level and continuos BAB progress, compared to a fighter gaining a feat every other level, so too should some arcane prestige classes gain something per level. In particular, the abilities you list seem to me very reasonable. A powerful / useful ability each LV is too powerful (just as a fighter prestige class with a feat every LV), but powers with very limited uses do not increase the PC power in a game or make you a uberwizard compared to the fellow with equal levels in wizard (at least his familiar got better and he learned a meta magic or two). This prestige class is unlikely to be taken by PC's because it does not make them more powerful. The ability & flavor are excellent.
I would extend the contingency to allow it more precision though. Perhaps LV in rounds for no penalty, minutes as 1 LV penalty, hours as 2 LV, days as 3 LV, and weeks as 4th LV. Example: a 4th LV death peddler wishes to give a doll with a contingency that can wait days, until the first night it is held by a sleeping child. While a 4th LV death peddler can make tokens of 3rd LV spells, this can only hold spells of (3rd-3) 0th LV spells. But - at the later contingency ranks gained (at 5th and 8th), ignore 1 LV of penalty. So a 5th LV death peddler would make a (4th-2) 2nd LV spell token that can wait days.

Oh, and does he sell action figures?

I like the idea a lot :) Though it's a shame his special abilities won't be of much use when the PCs find him (say, his trinkets coming alive to defend him, souls he collected from the trinkets released as ghosts, etc).

Nifft, I think its balanced for the reasons BeholderBob said. They lose familiar advancement, and 2 bonus feats over the course of the class, along with the requisites. Compared to other PrCs (Red Wizard, Incantrix, etc...) I think its pretty tame :)

Beholder Bob-I like your idea, the durations are upped with your change. And yes, action figures are a specialty of his, would you like one? ;)

Azure Trance, glad you like it, but you couldn't be more wrong ;) There's a couple things you could do with contingencies, and people. For instance, said pEDDLER could take a child hostage after they accepted a gift that held, oh, let's say Vampiric Touch set to take off whenever he was wounded in her presence. Another example would be to give a gift with Animate Dead, then kill and bury the holder, setting the spell to go off, animating all the dead around them whenever someone attacked him. Give a gift to a servant that targets them with Wave of Exhaustion whenever 4 or more people come near.

These are just a few of the ideas you can use with this PrC, with lots more if you can think creatively (and I suppose, without compassion) :)
