New Ranger Paths

It is available for download here:

It has been some time since I last checked it and now I can't find the Reflex Set feat there... perhaps it is from another older source but I swear I have seen a feat like that :D

EDIT: After a quick google search I have found a web that has lots of feats, perhaps it is of the author of the original feat on Netbook of Feats, don't know.

Another one that could be cool for spear fighting rangers would be (from the same source) the Pole Fighting feat.

Just using stuff in the SRD (not the core books, but close):

2 - Combat Reflexes
6 - Stand Still
11 - Whirlwind Attack

Havent seen it more then a passing glance of it, but I would imagine that the Spear Dancer (fighter type class for the Aiel (human subrace) in the Wheel Of Time book might be a good starting place).

I forget thier proper name.

How about a skill-focused ranger rather than weapon/combat focused? skill focus on wildnerness lore, stealthy, alertness, forester, treetopper, self-sufficient, etc sort of things. (some of those are from Forgotten Realms I think... but just listing some things that are skill-focused to give an idea...).

I just wanted to chime in here and say hello (or oy!). Have you considered looking at FFG's Wildscape, which has everything you are looking for. To quote a passage regarding Rangers: "In the core rules, rangers can currently select from a pair of weapon styles: archery or two-weapon fighting. This section presents rules for building variant ragners, giving you more options for ranger styles. It also gives you alternate rules for ranger characters who lack access to magical spells. These ruels build on the concept of ranger styles by giving more abilities to each option in exchange for this class's casting ability."

Some of the example styles they have introduced (not all are weapon related).

Two-Handed Fighting (2-Handed Defense, Sweeping Attack, Ferocious Blow)
Explorer (Frontiersman, Frontier Emissary, Alert Fighter).
Lorekeeper (Master Herbalist, Healing Hands, Lore of Beast and Blade)
Outrider (Horseman, Scout, Rough Rider)
Ranger Knight (Ranger Squire, Ranger Knight, Ranger Lord)
Slayer (Stalker, Marauder, Death Dealer)
Spear Fighter (Agile Spear Fighter, Precise Spear Fighter, Redoubtable....)

In addition they have expanded the lists for players who wish to have a ranger who does not cast spellss by taking those same styles above along with Archery and Two-Weapon Fighting and added additional abilities at 12th, 14th, 16th and 18th, thereby making the ranger more desirable to a player up to the higher levels.

There is also some great feats for a ranger that i have to mention, including Improved Track, Ear to the Ground, and Greater Track (I would especially like to say how much I like Imrpoved Track and Ear to the Ground.....allows you to replicate the Strider tracking feat from LotR:Two Towers).

The rest of the book is divided into sections detailing the different terrains and thier hazards/monsters, ending finally with weather.

All in All a great book for those who like to set their adventures outdoors.

This is an interesting idea.

2- Trapfinding or Skill Focus (any)
6- Favored Skill Check -- when performing ANY skill check "against" a Favored Enemy, add your FE bonus to the check. This included Hide, Move Silently, Tumble, Escape Artist and Forgery checks.
11- Skill Mastery (as Rogue special ability)

Ok, so we basically have a spear ranger path down pat, can anyone think of anything else?

I like the idea of a skill based ranger, but wonder what else there might be?

A Beastmaster Path :
2 - Animal Affinity
6 - the capacities of his animal companion are calculated with the full level of the ranger, instead of 1/2.
11 - Augment summoning

A Combat Riding Path :
2 - Mounted Combat
6 - Ride-by Attack
11 - Spirited charge

Hmm, an assassin Ranger:

2- Poison Use
6- Favored Enemy Sneak Attack
11- Favored Enemy Death Attack

Poison Use: per the Assassin PrC

FE Sneak Attack: When flanking, attacking a flat-footed enemy, or otherwise qualified to Sneak Attack one of his Favored Enemies, the Ranger may substitute 2 points of Favored Enemy bonus damage for +1d6 sneak attack damage.

FE Death Attack: Studies for 3 rounds, blah blah blah. Just like Assassin Death Attack, but only works against Favored Enemy, and Fort DC is 10 + 1/2 Ranger level + FE bonus.

The assassin ranger path is an intriguing one that I hadnt thought of. However, would you allow it for only evil rangers, due to the poison use, of open to all rangers regardless of alignment?
