New Release... What are they thinking?

They were thinking about me.

Someone who never played D&D 3.5 and will never play D&D 4E.

But would still like to own a decent rules set from these era's.

I like the idea of the compendium. Looks like a nice package.

Oh yeah, and what Scribble said ^

I'll be picking up the Rules Compendium and (possibly) Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk. After that it's sayonara WotC!

We play Midnight at our tabletop game and a rules compendium would be a welcome sight. it would lighten our loads greatly. Plus I don't see Midnight converting to 4e anytime soon so we will have good use of our 3e material for a good long while.

I was fortunate enough to attend the R&D seminar conducted by WoTC on Friday at GenCon. They reviewed all their remaining products coming out, but most of my focus was on 4e. I can't wait for 4e.

When they got to the Rules Compendium, Bill S indicated that "this is our gift to all the fans of 3rd Edition". This is everything you need to play third edition, all compiled into one book, so that you don't have to drag all those books to your game session. I believe the intent was to also take the opportunity to pull back the curtain on some of the design decisions and how/why things were built the way they were in 3rd edition.

My guess would be to expect something that's similiar to what we saw/found in the back of the Magic Item Compendium. These tools I've found INVALUABLE for my own gaming, so I say more power to them! More of that would be awesome as well!

Bill commented for all the 3rd ed books remaining on the calendar, they DO hope that most games and campaigns will "continue" unabated into the middle of next year, and that they were producing products with that intent in mind.

Depending on the content, I might. Right now, I have no interest in 4e based off of what has been revealed.

Ditto. I'd buy a 3.5 Rule Compendium if it was done well (i.e., if it proved useful).

Rules Compendium was constructed with the intent of providing all the major rules that come up during play at the table, and very few that apply to "way from the table" stuff, such as character creation, leveling, and adventure design tools. It contains a lot of clarifications and stuff like that, including some subsystems from supplements such as the Complete series and Frostburn. We even had a board of outside D&D gurus (from the Character Optimization boards at the Wizards site) put it through its paces. It should be a good source for rules.

Oh yeah, and it contains cool art from across the 3e era, including Dragon and Dungeon, along with designer comments and anecdotes.

As others have said, this is an ideal purchase for somebody who isn't interested in 4e, likes 3.5, and thinks this is a nice "capstone" piece to a 3.5 book collection.

I plan to buy the Rules Compendum, I may buy a 4e PHB, but I certainly won't be a regular 4e book purchaser and will still be running 3.5 unless 4e is knock-my-socks-off good.
