New Spell: Boiling Grease

Anabstercorian

First Post
Boiling Grease
Conjuration
Components: V, S, M
Level: Sor/Wiz 2

As Grease, except that anyone who falls prone or begins a round prone in the area of effect suffers 1d6 points of Fire damage. The round immediately afterwards, they suffer 1d4 points of damage, and suffer no damage after that. Once the spell duration ends or a character exits the spells range, they no longer take fire damage, as the boiling grease on their body vanishes.

Material Component: A minute glob of pitch.

A person (of very low IQ or poor luck) can enter, fall, leave, and then re-enter (and of course fall).... How about 1 HP per round in it unless prone. If prone while in the area of effect, take 1d6 "fire" damage. Take 1d4 "fire" damage the round following recovery from prone. I assume even a non-prone person will be uncomfortable walking through boiling grease. This also allows the unlucky or terminally stupid to get burned more then once. I wouldn't have the grease damage stop the second you leave the area. Thats my 1 SP and 2 CP worth.

I still think that, by far, the niftiest use of this spell is to cast it on some sliced potatoes. When it comes down to it, unless a new spell does something truly awesomely impressive compared to the counterparts of its level, it will not be very impressive.

Well, this is true. But, a spell does not have to be impressive to be worth making. If trying to develop a professional alchemist wizard, this spell may very well be the appropriate type of magic. I dislike overloads of cloned spells (______ ball, delayed _____ ball, _____ bolt, etc.) but I like spells that develope themes or styles. This sort of leg work makes it possible to develop a chain of alchemy spells, a sort of sub-school. Awesomely impressive 2nd level version of a 1st level spell, how much of a power jump are you expecting?

And Norfleet - wouldn't you feel silly when you meet the potato golem and don't have this spell memorized?
