While the miracle of awakening a trusted animal (or tree) to sentience provides many benefits for it, it does present some problems as well. Foremost among those is the search for a mate - unless a mate is similarly brought to sentience, an animal who has been awoken has to settle for mating with one of its... unenlightened kind. The result is an animal which is not infused with magic, but is smarter and hardier than its other brethren.
Half-Awoken animals tend to be leaders in their pack, or trusted animal companions to druids and rangers. These creatures are occasionally sought after to improve stock lines, but oftentimes go unnoticed by most people, who care little about the world around them. Half-Awoken animals rarely progress in any character class, but it is possible.
Half-Awoken
"Half-Awoken" is a template that can be to any animal or tree (as the Awaken spell). It uses all the creature's statistics except as noted here.
Hit Dice: Increase by +1 HD.
Abilities: +1d6 Int.
Special Qualities:
Comprehension - A Half-Awoken animal or tree can understand any language its parent knew as if it could speak it. However, a Half-Awoken animal can not speak. This provides certain benefits to those working with an animal using Handle Animal or Animal Empathy. Any time one of these skills is used by someone speaking a language the animal understands, a +10 bonus is applied to the check.
Spell Immunity - Half-Awoken creatures are immune to the effects of Awaken, although a Limited Wish, Wish, or Miracle can affect the creature as the spell. This removes the Half-Awoken template and applies the normal affects of Awaken instead.
