New to this, some questions

First Post
Hi everyone. This is my first post here, and I just wanted to learn some thing about Pathfinder before I delve into it.

When I looked through a friend's rule book, I was extremely impressed by the game as a whole, the spells, etc. However, I noticed that as in DnD 4E, there didn't seem to be a set trap skill. How do you go about setting traps? Are they counted as automatically setting up if you have them?

Is this game going to actually last? Is there a real following? Can we expect updates, new books, new classes and a continuation of everything already established?

Also, Hi!

Also, Hi!

You'd take the Craft (Traps) skill.. here is a link to the srd and some more information.. Traps & Hazards (Pathfinder_OGC)

And Pathfinder has a HUGE following.. you won't see it going anywhere anytime soon for sure. They have amazing talent in all aspects of the creative and business sides of things. I don't think I'm alone in saying their artwork is the best out there. Their adventure paths are by and large wonderful. They've done a great job of fixing what needed it in 3.5 without the major changes of 4e, which appeals to many people.

They have some new PrC's, spells, feats etc pretty much every month in their Chronicles or Companion lines. They are coming out with a Gamemaster book soon and then at Gencon they will have a Advance Players Guide, which will add class options, new classes, etc. So yes we can expect updates.

As far as how big of a following? Hard to say fairly big I would say, they have sold out of their core rule book twice. Doesn't tell us a lot since we have no idea how big the print runs are, all it tells us is. That the game is selling better than they expected.

To appreciate the scope of support for Pathfinder, you should visit their site at Paizo.com. The community there is fairly mature, and the number of supportive material is simply beyond one's ability to read.

Of course, the game itself is fairly new, so there aren't that many books built upon this particular version of d20. However:
- Pathfinder is backward compatible with 3.5. There are almost no necessary adjustments, and if you want to go into details, there is free conversion guide available (PDF download, follow the link, set up an account, add to your downloads, download the file).
- There are a lot of free downloads available at Paizo.com, some of the are PFRPG compatible.
- PFRPG (PDF) costs $10. Html sites are free.

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, and I just wanted to learn some thing about Pathfinder before I delve into it.

Welcome to the boards! I hope you enjoy your stay.

I think it's a safe bet the game will last. Paizo is a well-regarded company of several years' standing, and they have a staff full of smart and creative people. Pathfinder builds on the past ten years of 3E/d20 material and play experience, and its publication under the OGL guarantees that it will be supported for as long as people are interested in it.

A recent thread had stats that estimated that Pathfinder was one of the top three PnP RPG brands in 2009. It has the advantage of being built on a known product, and providing a definite alternative to 4E; WotC has the brand, the marketing dollars, and an excellent creative team of its own to continue pushing D&D down the 4E road, but a quick glance around the Internet will tell you that not everyone wants to follow that path. :) So I don't think it's going anywhere for a while.

As for the product lines, they are (very sensibly, I think) being cautious about releasing more than 2 or 3 new hardcover rules expansions a year. Lots of people were burnt out by the amount of 3E product produced by WotC and 3rd party d20 publishers from 2000 to 2008; as others have mentioned on these boards, there's enough so that no one would ever need to buy another book again for the rest of their lives to keep adding surprises to their campaign! Instead, Paizo is supporting their RPG lines with adventures (the monthly Adventure Paths you may know about) as well as world-building books that have a lot of non-rules material, and a small amount of new rules material. It seems to me that they're going to quality, not quantity, with the rules they put out, and I imagine a lot of people appreciate that approach.

Well it looks like you got your question answered deathMetal4tw (is there anyway to shorten that? dM4tw or something lol)

Just wanted to add my Welcome to Enworld and let you know there are lot's of PF games here and a new Living World starting up (link in my signature see below). You should come make your trap crafting character there soon.

Have fun gaming, :D

Given that company exec James Jacobs just informally confirmed that most of their product to date has sold REALLY well, chances are Pathfinder ain't going anywhere soon. They have a pretty dedicated "long tail" fanbase at the very least, and they have their full attention thanks to product quality.

I would also suggest checking out Pathfinder Society games at a local hobby shop. You can even use a pregenerated character and join in. It is a great way to get a feel for the system.
