New warlock...race?

werk

First Post
I'm pretty much decided to play a warlock with a group that I am joining. It's in the Forgotten Realms and the DM says that I can get creative if I'd like...so I'm overwhelmed with possibilities.
I'm even considering taking one LA hit if the race is cool enough.

We're around a bunch of elves, so star elf jumps immediately to mind.
Also considering little-folk, gnome or halfling...but then I see the chaos gnome and the water halfling...and the da'hin'ni (halfling djinni bastard from dragon mag).
Aasimar?
Fire mephling?
Lizardfolk/catfolk/goatfolk?

I'd like a little synergy with warlock, but I'm open to anything not disadvantageous. I get to start at level three, one level behind the rest of the party...but not for long.

It really depends on what flavor of warlock you're going for. If you want the warlock to be a good blaster without bothering with DC invocations, something that boosts dexterity and AC like a halfling is a good idea. On the other hand, if you're relying on the DCs of various invocations, something that boosts Charisma (Tiefling, I think) is a very good bet.

Tiefling penalizes Charisma, it doesn't add a bonus to it.

If you really want to specialize in blasting, Xeph might be cool. And in FR, Strongheart Halfling is always an amazing choice.

What level?

Generally LA races make for bad choices for a class that depends on CL or level based abilities like a warlock.

Also the extra feat that being human grants is extremely tempting for a feat starved class like a warlock.

The Fey Heritage feats could make a good choice (and fit in with fey-like elves to boot).

Have you thought about an Aasimar?

For a +1 LA you get:
  • +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma.
  • Darkvision: Aasimars can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
  • Racial Skills: Aasimars have a +2 racial bonus on Spot and Listen checks.
  • Special Attacks: Daylight.
    • (Sp): An aasimar can use daylight once per day as a 1st-level caster or a caster of his class levels, whichever is higher.
  • Special Qualities: Resistance to acid 5, cold 5, and electricity 5.

Also, unless you really like invocations with save DCs (and let's face it, most of them aren't very good), the most important stat for a Warlock is probably Constitution.

Races of the Dragon has a couple of good options: Spellscale has a Charisma bonus, and Dragonborn has a Constitution bonus. Magic of Incarnum also has the Azurin, which is basically an interesting variant human.

Which do not stack with the warlock's class (10th level +) resistances. There is at least one prestige class that does have the resistances stack, but unless specifically stated otherwise resistance (like DR) only "layers".

Chaos Gnome (Races of Stone) would work well - it is +1 LA, but gets +2 to Dex/Con/Cha, entropic shield as a spell-like ability, and a free reroll 1/day (+ most typical gnomish things).
