New "which 8 classes are in PHB" speculation thread

Fighter: Defender. Uses Weapon Talents to attack foes.
Paladin: Defender. Uses Weapons and Divine Blessing to further his faith.
Cleric: Leader. Uses divine magic to aid, buff, and heal allies.
Warlord: Leader. Uses Inspirational Auras to aid, buff, and heal allies.
Wizard: Controller. Uses arcane magic to destroy foes.
Druid: Controller. Uses Animals, Plants and Weather to control the battlefield.
Rogue: Striker. Uses urban skills and sneak attacks to wound foes.
Ranger: Striker. Uses wilderness skills and skirmishes to wound foes.

Except for maybe paladin, these are in fact also the classes I hope make it to the PHB1 :D

Personally, I would like to see only 4 classes (the classic 4), and a hell of a lot of options between those....

It's been confirmed that there are only 8 classes in the new PHBI.
Well, insomuch as anything has been confirmed. They're pretty clear that there's still lots of playtesting to be done.

So, when did folks come to accept this "warlord" class as a given?

I don't think its a given. The way they talk about it in the podcast makes you wonder, but they did say that there would be a new class so far Warlord is it. I do take for gospel the archetypes that were mentioned in the one video.

The warlord is mentioned all over the place on these boards. There is a screen cap from the presentation given at GenCon from the character generator that's part of D&DI. Also, check the YouTube Video from GamerZer0 labelled Roles. Do your own leg work.

For speculation, I'm continuing with my hypothesis (first put forth in the Warlord thread) that Warlord is the renamed Barbarian, & will function as a Leader through warcries (or similar mechanic) which incite allies to berzerk, buff them against fear, & other sorts of things like that.
What about the warlord as the renamed paladin, the traditional high-charisma melee combatant? It also clears up the name issue, which clearly ties in to at least Good, if not LG, alignment.

In the James Wyatt interview he mentions Paladins as Defenders and Warlords as Leaders, so presumably not.

The warlord could be a mix between barbarian and bard, inspirational powers of the bard mixed with martial prowess... throw in some dragon shaman and marshal to, perhaps?
