new world idea? has it been done?

I was wondering if a DnD world that was entirely a city would be interesting to you guys here. has it been done before?

I'm looking for something like Asimov's Trantor in fantasy.

massive gates to other "farm worlds" were all the food basic produce was grown.. shades of the Borg...

what you guys think?

thanks,

i was actually looking for a trillion people sized city. (ie. an ENTIRE planet)

i thought sigil was pretty cool, but was wondering if there was anything bigger out there.

Well if you want it that HUGE, I don't know of anything that has been done like this. To make it more interesting should have it so that over time there have been many areas that have been built on top of each other instead of taken down and rebuilt. Would add a lot of catacomb like places of abandoned lower areas.

This world would be entirely dependant on magic (unless you are going sci fi) to bring in materials and food. Mages may even be the rulers.

i was hoping that i had just not heard of something like this that has been put out.. not sure if im ready for such a dauting task... :)

yeah, there would have to be something like hundreds of feet of stuff in the honeycombesqe building structures.

And talk about an UNDERDARK. Hell, you have an UPPERDARK :) hehe thousands and thousands of tunnels..

everything would come in through the gates to the farm worlds. hrm... thanks guys!

World City

I think the idea has merit, but I do think that several character options seem to hinge on nature and it would take a lot of doing to develop something to replace the diversity of monsters available through a wilderness. Concerns like these have probably always been an obstacle

That and the massive amount of magic involved as well as the massive tome necessary to give the place any detailed justice.

Even if you sized the concept down to an urban environment the size of FR, the real challenge to overcome is making up for the diversity of environments created by wilderness and urban settings in the same campaign.

Not impossible, but a challenge.

Have you ever considered the possibility of a magically sculpted world like Farmer's RiverWorld?

That place was effectively a worldwide city so effecient that people didn't always need large structures or obvious infrastructure.

I have always advocated the idea that human cultures would really reach their pinnacle when you could adjust the local ecology and environments to perfectly fit your needs. That way we could all live like Jabba. Neighborhoods with this ethic could be run by Druids and policed by Rangers.

Doing this with magic, rather than tech, is a lot more interesting to me actually.

actually, a bit embarresed to say so, i haven't read any farmer.

i think the druid concept would be actually more effective than in typical DnD. I mean really, people protecting the environment in a setting where there is Huge amount of unsettled land? i dunno i always had problems with the concept of druids being outside of society, (forest living tree huggers) and prefered the active socialy, lets find a natural balance for human/nature. (actually the concept of balance as concieved in the druid is much much more of a modern thought that a typical medieval one.. but anyway.)

i'd view druids as some serious bad-asses in this type of setting... they'd have to be to survive and the struggle to bring back nature would be interesting.

As far as I know, a planet wide city has not been done so far in D&D, although it has been done in Star Wars, with Coruscant.

thanks!
