Newbie Game: Which class should I play?

First Post
For those following the Paladin Code for Paladin of Ehlonna Thread (http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68823) you already know the specifices but here they are for those that don't:

My husband and I are introducing a friend into the game. She has never played before and my husband is going to DM the two of us through The Sunless Citidel. She is going to play a Paladin and I am trying to decide to make the party a viable force what would be the best complementary class to help keep us alive. I had thought maybe I should play two characters to help up our numbers but since she is more interested in the roleplaying aspect of the game than the rollplaying aspect, and I find it difficult to adequately roleplay two character simaltaniousely, I think I should stick to one. Maybe we should have an NPC to help us. I am not sure how much of a meat grinder Sunless Citidel is.

I have experience playing most classes and am comfortable with any class, race, alienment combo, but am unsure for party surviablitly what would be the best decision.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Emerald

I've not played Sunless Citadel, but I'd highly recommend a cleric: the paladin's laying on hands will probably not be enough to keep y'all alive, and the cleric can help out in combat, too.

On the other hand, if you can get healing assistance somewhere else (maybe a wand found early in the adventure, you can hint to the DM), you could consider playing something else, in order to widen the roleplay experience (clerics and paladins are awful similar).

Well, you can never go wrong with a cleric for you healing needs. Plus, you'll find yourself needing a few extra turn undead attempts than what the paladin will be able to do. Although, I'd be silly not to recommend my personal favorite, the psion. Take some ranks in use magic device, grab a few cure minor wounds wands and you have the healer taken care of as well as the fire-power that a well-developed psion can have.

Cleric, druid, wizard or sorceror, in that order of preference.

The first two for curing abilities. The last two: with d4 hit dice, lay on hands may be sufficient :P

This was supposed to be in general, I just wasn't paying attention, If a mod wanders in, could you move it please. Thank you

A cleric is too short-sighted. Eventually, you will be able to afford wands of CLW and then the paladin will be all you will need in the way of healing. I would recommend a bard or rogue. If magic was really important, you could go bard with an emphasis on Use Magical Devise. Oh yeah, and bards have healing too.

A rogue would be the good ultility character to get around locked doors and traps.

Cleric or psychic warrior ;)

reason for cleric: Follow the same god (makes for good rp, you all will nearly always have a similar goal, etc)

reason for psychic warrior: both of you are fighter types with secondary abilities, these secondaries will be in very different areas. This equals good versitility and strength.

Another reason for either of these: your classes will want different items most of the time, very important! Find out which sort of build the paladin is going to make and create a character to compliment it. either of the above two will be able to do this incredibly well. (especially if the paladin goes for The Face, which if she is going for the rp aspect seems like a good choice)

Healing can be accomplished via wands, potions and laying of hands. I disgaree that a cleric is the best compliment.

Arcane magic is often very useful as a back-up for a fighter type character. I'd place a high value on adding a wizard or sorcerer ... probably a sorcerer for a small party. Smaller parties need more firepower, not more versatility.

I also would not overlook a rogue. There are things in D&D that can not be handled by any other class. A rogue does not need to be a thief. A professional dungeon crawling rogue is a perfectly viable NG character.

There´s a nearby village called Oakhurst that the party most likely will visit before leaving for the Sunless Citadel. If your friend is more of a roleplayer than a rollplayer Oakhurst is a perfect place to start with. Several interesting NPC:s and a many possible plothooks can be established there. Make sure that your husband allows you to explore Oakhurst and its surroundings before leaving for the Citadel.
Good luck with your game and let us know how it goes!!
Bard or rogue is an exellent choice.
