[news] Chainmail is back

I thought Heroclix was already killing off Mageknight. Too little way too late?

Also, random packs make them all but completely useless for D&D.

Great... The mini quality is going to get even worse, and the few decent ones you won't even be able to find because they'll be "rare" or limited edition.

Give me Reaper any day...

are mage knight and hero clicks randomly bought? or do you know what you're getting? how about the new battletech?

are these games the new magic?

Yes
No
Random
Yes

The painting on the figures has gotten dramatically better since the first run of Mage Knight (one of the peopl in my gaming grop plays HeroClix , and some of the figures look pretty good. The randomness just turns me off. I spend enough on minis without getting buying a pack of 10 figures only to find 3 I'll actually use. :p

If they sold the packages by encounter level, randomness might be sort of cool; okay, I rolled some wandering damage, let me just open this pack and you'll fight what's inside!

On the other hand I don't want to have to buy 20 packs to find that marilith mini I need to trounce my players...

I see this as a successful venture.

I do not collect Mage Knight and I am not partial to their figures, but their figures are not aimed at me.

I love to buy pewter figures and paint them - it's part of the hobby I really enjoy. When chainmail stepped in I saw them as a potential source for new miniatures. They were very nice, but they were as expensive as GW and not any better than Reaper.

However, pre-painted plastic figures are perfect for those who do not enjoy painting, but do like having miniatures instead of counters.

I really believe a lot of folks fall in this latter category. Probably the majority of D&Ders - that is in no way a slam - hey they just would rather be reading stuff or playing as opposed to painting.

The factor I am undecided about is the randomness. I could see it working for them as it keeps the product viable past an initial selling period. I think it also helps build in more demand. If a pack sells for $8.00, but all you need is an UmberHulk - you may go online and buy an Umberhulk for $4.00 or maybe more. If the seller can piece stauff out and sell it then that creates more demand - well, you see where that's going.

A lot of people were turned off by MTG's collectability in '94 (including me), but the model has proved its sustainability.

I really don't think this will hurt the miniature makers or enthusiasts such as myself - after all - I will never buy them. (Never say never ;) )

Regdar will wait until they announce the figure line up and an example comes out. If it allows Regdar to get mini's that corrispond to other mini's Regdar's all for it. Regdar liked chainmail's first run, has every figure and found them expensive but really good. Hopefully if they keep the same detail, it will be good but Regdar sees them having the detail of Uki Ooh or Digimon figures.

If I can pick up cheap, pre-painted minis when I need to have them and get what I need, then I am all for it. If the packs are cheap enough, I suppose I would be willing to pay the markup of buying singles. However, I am not going to buy a whole cartload of boosters just to get those minis that I need. WOTC needs to realize that they will get ten times the sales if people can pick them up who will never play the miniatures game. I know I buy stuff produced for Warhammer because I can get a legion of skeletons really cheap, but I have no interest in Warhammer.

Instead of random boosters, who here wouldn't get behind a box of 20 kobolds, for instance? Imagine it as 3 each of 6 different looks, one "wizard" and one "cleric". I would buy each set that came out for each race! Hey WOTC, this is what I actually WANT!

If (and I'm in the camp that thinks this is a big if) this takes off, you may get part of what you want.

I know that the game stores near me sell individual heroclix and mage knight figures, much like individual magic cards. The commons appear to go for about a buck and I have never seen one for more than $20. (Of course, I have never looked at them with buying in ind, so they may get more expensive and I am simply ignorant on the matter.)

Anyway, I really like your idea of little boxed armies. Though you can get some boxed plastic squads of a small variety of troop types from thw Warhammer line. The plastic ones are priced quite reasonably (unlike the pewter), but the selection is limited.

Funny thing is, I remember being told by some expert that plastic miniatures simply were not cost effective against pewter. Now pre-painted plastic seems to be the coming thing (maybe). I wonder what changed? Will we be able to buy more plastic minis for the same price in the near future?

Also, fairly badly painted.

Actually, the paint quality has increased significantly. It's not as good as an excellent painter can do, right now. However, it's better or as good as your average dabbler now. For the price, it's an excellent value (as long as you don't mind random figures).

Indeed, some of the larger figures are available & not random. Most of the Dragons are excellent & the Hill Giant looks good (as long as you don't mind Dwarves with guns on his shoulders).

They've also released a set "the Painter's Edition." It's the base set of figures, unpainted & not attached to the dials.

I think this is a good move...

While I have played Mage Knight (and have a couple hundred figures), I've mostly used the figures for D&D (and the like), since I can't really afford lead minis nor can I paint.

Mage Knight was cool at first, but I think it seems to be running out of steam. For one, the company that makes it, seems to have changed focus from making Mage Knight to Hero Clix & Battletech.

The last straw for me , was their recent set of Mage Knight Dungeons expansion. All the figures, except the uniques, were the same as the figures in the original Dungeons set, only changed a little bit and given a new name

For instance, the Lizardman with a spear is now a "Fire Salamander" with a trident. Same figure, other than the name and weapon.

A gnoll poacher is identical to the gnoll fletcher, except he's got a crossbow instead of short bow.

On and on and on. It was a complete ripoff. I'm not alone in thinking like that.

So, I think the new Chainmail has a pretty good chance. Depends on the figures. Hopefully they will be more D&D like than the orignal chainmail ones
