Next big step?

So what will be the next big step in the SRD? Psionics have seen some use through at least three products (and I'm hoping that they'll be included more in settings as time goes on) but I suspect that for various reasons, we won't see a lot of psionic based suspport. Rather, I think that what we'll see if a new emergence of support once a few more 'core' rule books become SRD. I'm specifically thinking Epic Level and Deities & Demigods.

The only real question is, how long will WoTC wait to make them SRD? Psionics was pretty quick but a few theories is that it was quick because this book wasn't the keen seller than the three core ones were.

While there are other books I've heard a few people make a wish list to be added, ala Oriental Adventurers and Manual of the Planes, I don't see the game mechanical need for such. Sure, it'd be great to have 'official' samurai, but in some instances, I think that companies waiting for things to become SRD may be missing out on making their own standard. Part of the problem is probably everyone reinventing the wheel. HOw many sets of rules do we need for swasbucklers, low tech guns, and siege weapons? Especially since siege weapons have some SRD stats.

One of the things I like about Monte is his willingness to redesign the core classes. Outside of Soverign Stone, I haven't seen too many Core Classes.

Instead of waiting for OA to become SRD, publishers might want to make their own Core Classes. Perhaps other publishers would then use them? I don't know. Rambling again I see... Where's the brain medicine damn it! Or is that the spelling medicine...

Actually, the psionics rules draft were posted up quickly because a few publishers like Malhavoc Press (owned and operated by DMG author Monte Cook) wanted to release d20-based psionics supplement (e.g., If Thoughts Could Kill, written by Psionics Handbook author, Bruce Cordell).

As for new core classes, you can find them appearing in d20 products that are not of fantasy genre. Take AEG's Spycraft, for instance. I doubt you could use a Sorcerer in an ultra-modern "spytech" world.

It was my understanding that the Psionics Handbook was the best-selling book after the three core books.

Nothing will ever sell as much as the three core books. If the PsiHB was number 4, that puts it way up there.

The next stuff to be added will come from one of the two books you've named, is my guess.

My greatest wish is that the Epic Level Handbook gets in, because there's SO MUCH other companies can do with that information. I'd go on a buying frenzy... :D

That's the way I feel. I really would like to see some epic level modules.

Personally, I'm not in a rush to have Epic-Level rules to be made Open. I prefer to have rules from Star Wars RPG to be made Open already, long before d20 Modern which share some of the mechanics, mainly VP/WP health system.

You're not going to see Star Wars,Wheel of time or Call of Chuthlu being made open game guys they have separate deals in all these cases with third parties.

I beg to differ. While WotC cannot Open up Lucasfilm's or Chaosium's trademarks and IP, they can extract rules mechanics from the games and be made Open. That's all we need.

Personally, I'd rather WotC extract the VP/WP health system from the current Star Wars RPG now rather than wait until Fall of this year (just prior to the release of d20 Modern).

My personal wish-list of stuff to see in the SRD:

1. Manual of the Planes stuff (where applicable)
2. Monsters of Faerun critters (would be nice to use the greater doppelganger or beholder-kin, after all)
3. Epic Level stuff - loads of potential here
4. Deities & Demigods stuff - same here, different line of text
5. Some of the nice metamagic feats and spells from the FRCS

Just wishin', though. We'll see if any of it comes to fruition.

Cheers!
