Nexus Minor Skills

First Post
Okay I was going back and forth about the concept of minor skills but I decided to go with it after all. Basically all the major skills have a series of feats under each one that expands the use of those skills. This is the core of the system. Minor Skills are those skills that don't fall into that paradigm that well. They are things like crafts, professions, musical skills, interests, and languages.
My breakthrough came when I realized that I could do this by tech level and make it a lot more interesting and less cumbersome. Of course skills from earlier tech levels would carry over to the next tech level so they don't need to be listed again.

So I wanted to get some ideas from everyone here. Just pick a tech level and put some suggestions.

Busy, busy, busy. I've barely had time to check my email recently.

My breakthrough came when I realized that I could do this by tech level and make it a lot more interesting and less cumbersome.
Wouldn't that make it more cumbersome? And do you really need to state that someone can cook as a skill on their skill list?

Sorry I actually changed this a little since then. I decided to make it by tech level groups (Low Tech, Medium Tech, High Tech, Extreme Tech).
Basically I've got a few skills that are floating around the system that don't fit into a Major Skill very well.
For example I tried to create a Crafting Skill. Each feat was a different craft. The problem was that it caused a character like a Blacksmith to pick up a bunch of crafts that he may never use just to progress. Then I couldn't figure out Focus or Mastery feats and since the whole point of the structure of the skills was to remove those +2 bonus feats I ran out of things to put there. I couldn't think of anything to do with them.
I had sort of put it aside and stuffed them into survival but then I thought about it. My wife is a great jewelrymaker but she wouldn't last a minute in the woods on her own.
Plus I wanted to provide an easy way to customize your character even more. And it will help me fix up the Archetypes that I have been working on.

This is what I have now:

Minor Skills cover things like Professions, Crafts, and Interests. Specific languages fall under minor skills as well, though you don't need to bother writing down that you speak your native language. Language groups fall under the Academics skill.
Each level of a minor skill costs a feat. So one feat gives you a Trained Minor Skill, two gives you a Focused, etc. There is no level limit on Minor skills. You can be a Master in a Minor Skill at level 1 if you want to spend the feats. The other difference from Major Skills is that there are no feats under them. You can write in Minor Skills in the blank skill slots on the character sheet.
Minor Skills can be taken during character creation to fill out the number of starting basic skills.

Hmm. So they would basically be an aid for players to writing their characters background to which they could then reference during gameplay? That could work. Wouldn't be cumbersome either.

But it is a huge job getting a list of all of them set up first, like you are doing. You are talking about every skill humans do. :)

Well a lot of skills are already covered under the existing skill list. I'm trying to give people some ideas.

When are you planning on starting your game? That way I know when I need to have this stuff up.

Also I was hoping you would have some ideas for the medium tech skills.

At the rate things are going we won't have time until after Christmas.

Also I was hoping you would have some ideas for the medium tech skills.
From the example you have there wouldn't medium skills just be the same as the low ones, only more successful?

Low: Weapon Smith. You can make a weapon given the proper parts, and an equal rank in the appropriate forging skill. You can also maintain a weapon at normal level.

Medium: Same as low, but you can also modify existing weapons into better ones. You can maintain your weapons so that they get a temporary accuracy bonus.

High: Same as medium, but the accuracy bonus is permanent (when it's your weapon), and all related costs (monetary and time requirement) are reduced.

hmmm that would introduce a new system at this point. Right now I just need to fill out the skill list such as things like Piano for medium tech, video games for high tech, etc. I've just been staring at it for so long I can't think any longer.

I am going to go back to fix up many of the archetypes with this change as well but you can create characters all day long already. Plus you don't have to generate all the NPC stats anyway. Just check out the mook rules under the GM section.

How about this then?
