Has Kovalchuk decided to play in Russia?

Atlanta's payroll is already pushing $32 million and Kovalchuk is likely seeking at least $5 million-per-season. It was speculated this week that a club with cap space to spare might force the Thrashers' hand by tendering an offer sheet at the $7.8 million max. Similar tactics have been tried in the past -- remember Carolina and Sergei Fedorov? -- but it's hard to imagine GM Don Waddell losing both Dany Heatley and Kovalchuk within a month. And just to spice things up, Kovalchuk has signed with Khimik Voskresensk of the Russian League -- no doubt to a deal that includes an "out" clause.

"I think I am worth at least what (Dany) Heatley or (Joe) Thornton got from their deals," Datsyuk told the Russian media.
