I would treat it like a Potion Belt.

I would have the String made from Giant Spider /Drider silk or some such.

Cord leagnth be 15' max. Give it a Break DC, Max wieght and HP with Spider silk hardness.

Would have to be master work and put the craft DC at like 25. Gp cost at about 500gp maybe more

actually, i was thinking a few thousand

to cast shrink item via permanency costs 1500 exp, and i'm not sure what the cost of that (in gold) would be...

an adamantine chain might be less expensive, but i'm not sure how to price it.

maybe someone else might have a better idea?

At this point, you're better off with some kind of "returning" weapon... Would be useful when the sword is out of the scabbard.

Are you trying to re create it for a specfic character or as a general item for your game?

For a character in an up coming campaign. It's still not very sure yet, I was also suggesting in the house rule section a feat for a kind of telekinetic ability that would do the same thing.

I dont remember Ninja scroll super clearly...but I dont think something like that would be TOO expensive. Of course it could also just be a unique item for that character with a storyline/background reason for his having it.

Silk Rope perhaps.

I was actually thinking of this, not recently though. I would say its similar to silk rope. masterwork. or magically enhanced to be both thin and strong. you are talking about a string that can hold the weight of two people at least.
I would assume the rope is attached to his person via a leather band.(ie acts like a belt, but the string is inbetween two layers of leather, and possibly steel plates not unlike scale mail). though i would make up a feat, and make the whole thing a magic belt.

Though if you were looking for something nonmagical. I would create a feat, with preq's like quicker than the eye.
Because in that particular case, jubei moved his scabbard to distract the demon, (thus preventing the AoO.)

But nonetheless I picture the rope as masterwork silk (even if it doesnt exist) rope. you can always wind the rope back up and have it tucked under your crazy fabric belt. it wouldnt be more than 30 feet id imagine. why would you let your sword go that far from you?

I'm 100% with hong and melkorii on this one. MEA to recover weapon, uses a specialy treated spider-silk thread. No feats, magic, or ability checks since they complicate matters too much.

Call it a Scabbard String, have it cost around 600 to 700 gp to purchase and install. Masterwork alchemical item or somesuch.

I think witrh a heafty DC boost you may also want to allow it to be used it in order to get a second reflex saving throw to avoid a fall, mabye at +10-20 DC (depending on the terrain).

With Garret's suggestion I would make it a free action. But still, at this point, I think for the cost
you're better of with a "returning" magical weapon.

From the movie, I'd say MEA is reasonnable. He surely was 10th level iaijutsu master right?
