Ninja

First Post
I just joined the site and this is my first post, so before I actually begin it I just wanted to say hello. Hello.
Okay now, I am trying to create a ninja type character from scratch since I have not been very impressed with any of the Ninja prestige classes out there. (Only official Wizards class books and core rule books are allowed) The character is level 8, so far I have all fighter levels but might take three levels of rogue instead since it would make several skills class instead of cross class and give me 2 dice of sneak attack damage for two feats.
Now that that little background information is out of the way, here is my real question. Can anyone think of ways for my character to disapear easily? I have considered the Shadowdancer's "Hide in Plain Sight" ability but getting that first level of Shadowdancer requires two feats that are out of my way. I have also considered the "Invisibility" spell in all it's forms (spell, potion, ring) but the ring is the only one that provides the consistency and reliability (it has no limits to its use) I would need (a Ninja would have to be invisible ALOT) but it is too expensive. Characters have standard gold for 8th level characters (27,000) and the Ring of Invisibility just takes too big a chunk out of that. Can anyone else think of any ways my ninja-themed character could go undetected and get in close to his target?

Natural Ninja

Druid using Wildshape often to "disappear" into the background and do his dirty work.

Demon Ninja

Tiefling (ECL +1) using darkness to obfuscate the situation, probably taking a feat from RoF which allows darkness 3/day.

Arcane Ninja

Taking sorc levels to get invisibility and other illusions to disguise whats really going on.

Shadow Ninja

Going for Shadowdancer, bumping Hide and Move Silently.

Just some ideas. Remember that while a Ring of Invisibility is a great item, it can be stopped by a see invisibility or glitterdust, two common low-level spells. Dont depend on it too much.

HiPS is better, but is contingent on shadows, which may not always be around (especially if your foes are bringing it with light spells).

Storing Darkness on a stone in a lantern can be pretty useful for a ninja-character.

"Ninjas can kill anyone they want! Ninjas cut off heads ALL the time and don't even think twice about it. These guys are so crazy and awesome that they flip out ALL the time. I heard that there was this ninja who was eating at a diner. And when some dude dropped a spoon the ninja killed the whole town. My friend Mark said that he saw a ninja totally uppercut some kid just because the kid opened a window."

Sorry. I can't stop laughing at that. That site is hilarious. Gotta bookmark that one. It's funny!

Personally, I'd go with a Rogue/Monk character. But that's just personal preferences. They do make a pretty good class combination, though.

To play a ninja, you don't need a prestige class - not even the assassin prc.

A ninja is probably a LE/LN rogue with a few levels of monk. Your ninja-to only does 1d6 damage, so you can do the same thing with your unarmed attack.

Be sure to take many ranks in Bluff - you need this for spying, and you need this for the "ninja hand pattern" move - use this as a combat Bluff and then sneak attack them with your monk strike.

You also need Climb, Jump, Tumble, Hide, Move Silently and any other skill you can fit (the rest probably don't need to be maxed out).

Take Weapon Finesse - nothing is more embarassing than a ninja who misses in combat. Oh yeah ... poison + shuriken = nasty. Improved Disarm for when a samurai sees you *evil grin*

Not that it really adds anything to the thread, but this is my new license plate:
