Nip/Tuck---it is now one of my faves...

Empty and shallow their lives may be, but are they really portraying that? I just think that all the 'average Joe' sitting at home, watching the show is going to see is that ugly people don't get sex, but good looking people do.
You're basing this on seeing "a little of one episode".

Seriously, you have no idea what you're talking about. Why do you think your opinion about what the show actually portrays to people should be given any weight whatsoever when you don't know what you're talking about? Why in heaven's name do you think you can be even remotely right about something you're so ignorant about?

I just don't understand that judgemental attitude from someone so unfamiliar with the facts.

Well, you sure tried to put me in my place. 'Tried' being the key word. I'm not saying that I am an expert on the show, and I am in no way criticizing the acting, writing, directing or anything of that sort. All I am trying to do, is express my views and oppinions on the topic of the show. I personally dislike plastic surgery, but that is simply my own opinions and views. I may be ignorant in terms of the show, but I am not ignorant as far as plactic surgery itself.
I'm not trying to diss the show, just the theme.

I believe the point that Fast Learner is trying to make is that you can't really judge the theme of a show (at least this one in particular) unless you have experienced more than 'a little bit' of it.

And the 'average joe' is more likely watching Average Joe or Survivor than watching Nip/Tuck. FX is not one of the highest rated channels, but this show is getting rave reviews for a reason.

This reviewer pulls no punches in his article, citing both the good and the bad.

SF Chronicle review of Nip/Tuck

But before you truly condemn the show, you may want to look a bit deeper.
As for glamorizing plastic surgery? The show is more likely to leave you (at least me) forever turned off by it. Sure the results are (sometimes) beautiful, but it requires slashing, cutting, suction, implants, bone-breaking, tissue-relocation, artificial fillers, industrial biotoxins....all of which are made absolutely clear to those who watch the show.

Besides, there's only so many times you can restuff the doll and still make it look good...

But in the end, even after hearing all of that, even after going through all of that, do the characters still get what they originally wanted? Attention, and to be desirable? Note: This is an actual question, not a rhetorical snide remark, just so no one yells at me again.

To me, all the show is saying is, "get a facelift, and you'll get laid!"

Except the most sex crazed of the show is one of the doctors who has yet to have unneeded surgery but did use botoxin and it did not look pretty.

No they don't which is why I think the show does not make plastic surgery look "good" this show does not make plastic surgery glamourous, it actually makes it look real to me, you have to go through a lot to make yourslef look good.

This show also shows them help people who have need for plastic surgery, not just for vanity.

Off the top of my head:
Circumcision (spelling)
Reform a face after a car accident
Breast implants after cancer
Removal of an Adam's Apple on a transvestite (comped)
Replacing a female part because her tribe in Africa destroys them as a culture demeaning of women
etc....

So they show good and bad and show reasons why people may need the doctors.

So far, the main characters are still in pursuit of that. More importantly for them, they are in pursuit of some kind of stability.

As for the clients, each one is different. Some are there for cosmetic surgery to correct either a horrible accident or an error of nature (a gentlemen had a huge growth on his neck removed, about the size of a softball). And they come away looking, and feeling, like much more normal people.

In fact, not too many of the clients they show are what you would call 'routine' plastic surgeries. And those that are of the 'routine' kind, are glossed over and completely forgetable.

Your answer would be yes, but with a caveat.

Many of them come away happy, or at least satisfied with the results, but not all.

An example from Season 1, an extremely overweight woman wanted them to miraculously transform her into a sexy model type. The doctors inform her that before they even begin planning the surgery, she would need to lose some weight, change her lifestyle, etc., because she was not healthy enough to undergo such radical body alterations. They laid out the realities for her, as kindly as possible.

They've dealt with 1 plastic surgery 'junkie' already, and I believe there is another one in an upcoming episode.

A pair of identical twins wanted to look different(already gorgeous girls, in my opinion), and when the procedure was finally done, they shared a mental breakdown because they were not prepared for the shock of being different.

And there's plenty more....

As for the sex aspect?
One of the Doctors tried to go to Sexaholics Anonymous for a while, and it turned into an even greater mess for his life(it's always bad when 2 recovering sex addicts meet for drinks).

The Swan (on FOX), glamourized their contestants far more than anything on Nip/Tuck does. And those were real women subjecting themselves to the tortures of body manipulation in front of the world. And yes, I realize the same company runs both networks, but the same people didn't create both shows, so I feel justified in degrading one and not the other :D

Okay, that was personal... We don't do that here, everyone can talk all about the show, you can talk all about the goods and the evils of plastic surgery but no one needs to make their attacks personal, okay?

Thanks,
