My PHB and DMG came today. Am I right that there is no section of inspirational material? (If not, apologies if I missed the discussion of it. If so, where is it hiding?)

Which other editions didn't have one?

Is it a loss?

There are 2 problems of it for me.

1. There is so much out there including lots of great movies and TV shows that inspiration can be pulled from that I don't think there is as much use for it and they would also end up leaving out so much good stuff.

2. I think it is better to not define D&D that much and let people be define it for themselves based on the descriptions and artwork.

If it were to have such a list I think a great rule would be to have no works that are less than 100 years old and prioritize ones that are much older than that. Esp. if they are the first known inspirations of some themes and ideas like our oldest fae folklore and such.

I'm amused I just said the complete opposite.

I would like to see some inspirational sources that have come into existence since 2014. I was never a huge Fantasy reader and mostly read SF. So, it is nice to have some recommendations.

The Wandering Inn!

It is the first modern fantasy series I've really loved and there audio books that are fantastically voice acted.

I've added it to my Goodreads 'want to read' list. Now 294 books long.

Come to think of it, those inspirational reading lists from multiple sources is the reason it is so big.

Today an "Appendix N" is impossible. It would need to mention almost every scifi (including fantasy) novel that people read today, and even more importantly every movie and tv series.

I try to find scifi tv shows, and the list from inspirational tv alone would be over 200, nevermind movies and books.
