"No Core" game

I did something sort of similar as an exercise once. I rolled a d4 for every class in a wotc product (Core or not). On a 1 or 2, the class was dropped. You get a weird combination of classes. But I made sure the fighter and rogue were automatically included.

I wanted to do the same thing with core spells, too. And maybe even feats. It could be a lot of fun - an entirely different play experience.

Your party might have a xeph psion, a darfellan knight, a warforged dragon shaman and an aarakocra spellthief as pcs. Your big adversaries might be firenewts led by an avatar of elemental evil. I dunno, what do you think?
I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder. SOMEBODY GET HER OUTTA THERE!

I had planned to have a "Unorthodox Game" where all classes would come from The Le's series of books on classes. I have not had a chance to actually run such, but I think it would be fun.

What would be the ultimately versatile (non-core) 4 man party?

- Binder
- Factotum
- Dragon Shaman
- Warlock

Skills are as part of the basic rules as much as combat, you can't really take them out because you don't have something non-core to replace them with.

I'm interested in hearing what to plan to do about healing... no Cure xxx Wounds spells and potions?

Well, ignoring UA and XPH (since both are almost/essentially core anyways) and from what I know the Archivist (HoH) and the Artificer (ECS) would also be good choices on that list.

cheers,

Not wrong, particularly the Archivist; I've seen them (well, one) work well. And don't forget something Bo9S-flavoured for your general ass-kicking.

Uh, this is a WotC-only party, I assuime.

The Binder and Factotum are flexible, the other two are quite fixed. Better would be a primary spellcaster or two.

- Erudite
- Archivist

Alternately, use some prestige classes. Chameleon would be a reasonable spellcaster replacement, and is quite flexible.

While I use the core books, I do not allow core races in my game, as it is set beneath the surface of the sea. Monsters, treasures, adventure locales, and NPC encounters are all modified for the environment. PCs must have a natural swim speed and be able to breathe underwater without the use of magic.

But making things up is half the fun of DMing! :)

I play in a mostly non-core core game weekly. It works out really well, actually. It's definitely helpful when you have a DM who likes writing his own everything. You know the guy, too. He's probably mentioned his crazy system(s).
