Not to nit-pick, but the above cited passaged are not self-contradictory. The first passage lays down the general rule - two of every kind of animal. the second passage lays down an addition to the rule - seven (or fourteen depending on your interpretation) of every clean animal. There were two of every clean animal, but there were also additional clean animals. This makes perfect sense as the clean animals were animals that could be slaughtered for food or used as sacrifice (thus a greater number of them would be required to ensure there would be a food supply post-deluge). The unclean animals however, which would be the majority, were there purely for breeding purposes and were not required for the continued sustenance of human life..
