I actually voted against the warlock because they make mediocre NPC's. An NPC warlock is a weak adversary. Its strength lies in his unlimited supply of invocations. Given the short lifespans of NPC's in combat, the warlock is somewhat weak. An npc cleric or wizard is substantially tougher.

Perhaps, though it's way easier to make an NPC warlock than a cleric or wizard -- it's the difference between picking a few invocations, or a lot of prepared spells. And said cleric or wizard will only get to use a few of those spells, so why not go with a class that might actually use all/most of its combat options in a few rounds?

It's interesting that there is so much vitriol being spewed in this thread with regards to the last three classes. You'd think that the last three classes would be the most popular choices, and it would be down to a difficult decision on which was better.

I think the main lesson learned from this series of polls is not what the best non-core class is, but rather that nobody will ever agree on that question.

I think some of it has to do with the way this type of poll can be controlled. If the poll asked to vote for the one you want to keep, there would be very little one could do to trow votes because if you try, the one you really want might go bye-bye.

Since 2E came out I've been trying to figure out what possible connection a commando has with automatic TWF. It just doesn't make sense as a class feature.

I had a similar objection, not seeing the relevance of dual-wielding to a woodsy class. I was ranting about this at one point to a friend, and commented something along the lines of "I have yet to hear a single good justification for the ranger's automatic two-weapon fighting. In fact, should I ever hear a satisfactory one, I will never rant about it again." My friend, interrupting my rant as I take a breath, says simply, "Claws." The only respose I recall mustering was something along the lines of "<blink> <blink> Well, :) :) :) :) ."

As a note, the voting currently stands at 90, 88, 45. Close one!

Because of balance issues. The spec-ops soldier stereotype (which I do not think holds true IRL, but that's another story) is simply too good to be a balanced base class. Tough, strong, fast, skilled, capable with weapons, capable in unarmed combat, cunning, able to survive, agile, athletic... the list just keeps going. It's got "prestige class" written all over it. Or gestalt, if you prefer that alternative.

Allow me to disagree.

You could pull it off with a straight up fighter/rogue if you so wanted. Really the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that's missing is survival as a class skill from either list.

I've checked this poll several times today, and every time the Duskblade and Scout have either been even with each other (such as the 63 / 63 vote last time I posted to this thread) or the Duskblade has been ahead by two to five points, or the Scout has been ahead by a few points. It seems like this will be a very close race - a true photo finish. Who wins will likely be determined by random chance in who lasted voted, as I have little doubt that which ever wins will win by only a few votes.

That said, the Warlock seems to be doing quite well. I wouldn't be surprised if it were the final winner, I'll say again.
