I've voted the Artificer each time. I figure I'll contribute to getting rid of it sooner or later. Aside from that, good to see the Ninja having a hard time.

Die, die, die!
*hacks at the Artificer in Black Mage-esque fury*
What?

It really bugs me to see the degree of dislike for the Oriental classes. (Other than the CW samurai, that is.)
Hear, hear! It's irrational, the level of dislike. You don't see Japanese and Chinese saying knights and plate mail are stupid! And a well-developed D&D world should have a multitude of cultures. Worldwide Europe is dull.

I suppose I'm on the side of not liking oriental stuff co-mixing with my "traditional" fantasy. Maybe living in Australia means that Asian influences are far more a reality for me than fantasy. Or maybe it's just because mixing the two flavours simply does not appeal. I can't really fault the mechanics; and I suppose they are easy enough to "medieval-up". But as presented, they just don't gel for me.

Anyway, just a perspective for you to think about from the other side of the fence. I hope it does not bug you too much. :)

I really like the ninja as I've said before, I agree the sudden strike thing is weird, but with his ability to go invisible when he wants its not like he can't get the SA damage in.
It's not a question of effectiveness or poor mechanics, just my personal belief that abilities that are pretty much the same ought to be the same (I think there used to be a 3e design principle that "things should be different, or they should be the same").

One of my "proud nails" is the Smite mechanism:

1. As the Destruction domain power, it gets +4 to hit.
2. As the paladin's smite evil or the blackguard's smite good, it gets Charisma bonus to hit.
3. As a celestial or half-celestial creature's smite evil, or a fiendish or half-fiend creature's smite good, it gets no bonus to hit.

I think it would be simpler and not terribly unbalancing if all smite abilities got Charisma bonus (if any) to hit.

I voted Favored Soul. Could be good, but isn't.

Also, don't be hatin' on the Scout -- it does ranger better than ranger ever did.

That's the problem. It's in the ranger territory. The right answer is to fix the ranger, not to overpopulate the class selection with another near-ranger.

I ought to mention that the following classes are completely closed books to me (not having HoH or ToM). Would anyone like to give a two-three line explanation of each of them?

Archivist (Heroes of Horror)
Binder (Tome of Magic)
Dread Necromancer (Heroes of Horror)
Shadowcaster (Tome of Magic)

Voted for the War Mage, for mechanical issues, and flavor ones. (I prefer versatility to specialization).

As for the Heroes of Horror classes...

Dread Necromancer is pretty much what the name advertises, a caster who specializes in reanimating the dead and commanding/bolstering/generally having an army of undead around, and little else. Has a decent skill list including some stealth skills, light armor and weapon profs, minor DR that scales up with levels, and at 20th level, you become a Lich.

Archivist is the religious scholar class...an Int-based Divine Spellcaster who studies ancient tomes, knows the lore of the church, and of it's foes. The archivist's main cool ability allows it to aide the party against foes it has researched by vocally informing the party of the creature's strengths, weaknesses, and likely tactics, even during a battle, granting bonuses to attack, damage, saving throws, etc. to it's allies (which increase with level. It's the divine equivalent of a bard, with a dash of the know-it-all wizard-type.
