Non-Metal Metallics

I learned a new trick with metallics and inks I'll be posting a tutorial on in the near future. I use a base metallic. I then go over the highlight areas with very bright metallic - I often add a little white to make it high enough. I cover this with a wash of dark brown ink with a tiny drop of Elmers glue. I then take the original base metal color and trace the area where the highlight and the base with wash meet.

Very, very quick and I like the results. An excellent speed painting techinique. Here's an example:

You could also use a mix of metalic / non-metalic techniques to achieve a very good result. Use the metalic paints to provide the base color and metalic consistency. Then use the techniques of NMM to provide highlights that are complimentary and really bring out the metalic sheen on the surfaces.

This is what I'm currently doing. I played around with NMM and looked a t lot of NMM minis and I just like using the metallic paints better. I play around with mixing though, and the results usually look nice (I'm still new at it)

pogre's tips sound great too

What sold me on this technique was a miniature painted by Ali McVey, wife of Mike McVey of GW fame. She used this technique and the effect was fantastic. It does take some practice to get a fantastic effect but I like it better than pure NMM. Besides, IMO, a quick paintjob using this technique still gives you a better effect than a poor NMM.
