Well sugar boiled up a little and carmelized (I think that is the term) can be quite hard. So for one nasty wack it could do some damage. And you could just lick it sharp as needed.
But seriously I often have a wooden weapon made of ironwood or darkwood as a back up, sometimes with metal weights on the interior to help it swing hard enough. Have met one too many rust monsters.
