Non-proficient weapons with ki-focused implement powers.

First Post
i have a character concept in mind of a guy who collects different swords, and fights with a very fluid attack style, allot of moving/shifting about and attacking.

I was thinking of making him a monk, as they have allot of movement options, and there ki-focus allows for the character to keep different swords that he can pick and choose without having to enchant them all every couple of levels.
The problem seams to be the monks lack of proficiency with weapons, and whilst a hybrid into an arena fighter would make all weapons improvised, i would rather keep the character fully monk, or atleast Dex based.
So i was wondering, whats actually stopping me using weapons im not proficient with through my kifocus with monk attacks, im not using there stats at all really. failing that, is there an arena fighting multiclass feat available? or is there another option to make this character?
Many thanks in advance,

Your monk can hold a sword in hand and not actually use it, mechanically, to make attacks (using the ki focus instead). The only time proficiency would enter into is when making basic attacks, or if you wanted to use the sword as an implement instead of the ki focus.

Okay, that makes sence, i thought you had to use a weapon through your ki-focus but being able to use it on its own is cool.
Whats the point in useing a weapon through it then? Or is it only to add enchantment to weapon attacks?

There is no point in using a weapon other than:

a) flavour; and

b) feat benefits, such as twin hafted defence, which boosts your AC when you wield a staff/polearm in two hands. There is also a club feat which is popular with monks... don't know if there are any sword ones that work, though.

Something may have changed with the monk, but my recollection is that they can use any weapon they are proficient with as an implement. As for using a weapon through your ki focus, there are some feats and powers (for Iron Soul monks) that require the use of particular weapons. You don't get any benefit out of the weapon itself (enhancement bonuses, damage die, critical damage, etc.). Mostly it's a flavor thing.
