Nonmagical ways of defeating a sorcerer

Step One: Charge Sorcerer screaming.

Step two: Laugh as intimitaded sorcerer grabs for his longspear.

Step three: Take Long Spear from sorcerer with just a plain old disarm. Don't mind the AoO he won't hit you, he's a sorcerer.

Step four: Insert longspear into sorcerer's throat

Step five: Cook familiar (butter and garlic sauce would be nice)

you forget:

Step six: Sell small portions for big money

Step seven: Profit!

While all of the melee routes would make for good ways to take a sorcerer down, those mainly hinge on the assumption that the sorcerer in question is willing enough (read: stupid enough) to let you get close; and believe me, there are few who are.

And even if he is willing to let you get close, there's no telling what magical ace in the hole he's going to have to make you regret it -- things like the power to let melee weapons pass through him harmlessly, blood that burns you like acid upon contact, the power to make you or someone you love suffer any wound you inflict on him, or worse. Sorcerers can be bastards like that. :D

Perhaps I should add "without resorting to hack and slash" to the list of prohibitions for this thread. That kind of thing should come after you've found a way to defeat his powers -- if the sorcerer's stupid enough to stick around instead of teleporting out of there or otherwise getting away at that time.

The best rogue method of severely cramping the style of a sorcerer is to pick pocket his spell component pouch. Generally this quickly eliminates many spells off his list. Similarly applies to wizards, clerics and druids who can also have spell books and holy symbols stolen.

Wow, that's actually a technique I never would have considered.

Splashing them with acid or fire (continual damage sources) is great, giving them 1 more Concentration check to make to get their spells off.

Waiting them out is useful as well. If you can get them to fire off their spells, and then wait out their buffs, your mates can attack him easily. You might be a bit burned (or dead), but he will be too (and you've got friends to res you).

True story ... RttToEE, moathouse, the party is getting slaughtered and the sorcerer is the last one standing. He runs for the lift to escape, chased by a fiendish dire ape, and he only has his cantrips left. The ape reaches him, and the sorcerer casts prestidigitation to make his own eyes glow red and grow small horns on his head.

He rolls Intimidate ... and the fiendish dire ape is successfully cowed by the sniveling sorcerer.

It would be a cooler story if the sorcerer lived, but the wizard foe killed him. Total Party Kill.
