Northern Crown?

I have a keen interest in the setting, but none of the local game stores have a copy of the Gazeteer in stock. I've seen the core book and, while very sexy, it doesn't actually seem to contain a lot of setting material (i.e., it's mostly mechanics, it seems). So, I'm somewhat with the OP here... is the actual setting as cool as the rules make it seem?

[Note: Yes, I've put off buying the darned thing for more than a year due to my inability to locate a copy of the Gazeteer.]

In case people weren't aware of the bad news Doug announced in this thread:

http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=177323

That Adamant wasn't putting out any more issues of Franklyn's Almanack. Because of that I wanted to see if there was any interest in starting a free Northern Crown web fanzie like the very well done Hall of Fire for Decipher's LOTR game and the Oerth Journal for Greyhawk. I was envisioning with Doug's ok :) of course! Something similar for Northern Crown to the two fanzine's I mentioned. I'm not good at graphics or editing but I'd thought I'd suggest it write an article. So maybe we could get some articles or artwork and create a well dome fanizine Just an idea :) I thought up a name too? The Sophian Chronicle? :)

Mike

Sorry I've been silent on this issue but Adamant, as far as I know, retains the only license for NC supplemental materials. I can't really endorse a web fanzine as you describe, but I'm very happy to hear your continued enthusiasm for my game world and I'm always hanging around on these boards to hear your ideas and answer your questions.

I looked at it and I like the idea. After watching the Patriot I thought of staging adventures in the New World and I like the alternate history (what if the Vikings hadn't been driven off, what if the experiment in the Carolina's had succeeded, etc.) the only problem I have with tying it with Nyambe is that well, how do I say this, it seems that the setting while good is still highly derivative of the real world and tying it with a fictional continent that looks nowhere near like Africa stretches my suspension of disbelief a bit, though Nyamban Engolos are a good way to bring the monk into the game.

Darn, that really felt like a sale. ;)

Seriously, Nyambe's geography has very little bearing on a Northern Crown campaign unless the PCs actually go to Nyambe. What excites me about being able to link my campaign to Chris Dolunt's marvelous Africa is the rich backstory it gives to Cimmaron PCs in a Northern Crown game.

I was thinking about doing a historical D&D game based on the d20 Past Age of Adventure campaign with a little of the old Magitech and a dash of Elric and Wheel of Time. It would have Seachan like Spainards with their specially bred half-orc warriors and their chained sorcerors at war with the Melnibonean-like Mayan Elves of Jukup Tayaj with the free island of Curaco and its sorcerors holding onto a tenous existence, in addition to the whole Chinese-Russian border dispute, the Island of Taiwan with its ruler Koxinga the last of the Ch'ing admirals and the pirate-king on the other side of the world, the rule of the brutal Shah Jahan in India, and with the last competent General of the Ottoman Empire making a push into Europe as it recovers from the 30 year war.

Northern Crown does seem like it would be a good alternate version of North America to plug into to my vision. I'll see if I can get it from my local FLGS. If anything I could use Nyambe to make my own Africa. Just don't expect me to use it like it is.

Headless Valley was essentially a turn of the century 'lost world' legend - complete with vast riches, pre-historic monsters, and murderous savages. In Canada.

According to cryptozoology, Headless Valley is home to the waheela, a big, white wolf. Winter wolf or just a dire wolf, mebbe.

Skull & Bones could fit into the southern portions of the setting, no?

Northern Crown's one of those settings I want so bad to pick up, but just can't seem to scrounge up the money for... (finding a store that has it is a problem, too)...

I bought the 2 hardcovers as soon as I found out about the game- had to special order them (and I live in Dallas/Fort Worth)- along with Nyambe, and have never regretted any of the purchases.

I haven't, however, even seen a single copy of the Franklin's books. I guess I'll have to order them as well.

All I haved to say is that if there are further products released for this setting, or related to them, GET THE WORD OUT! Its one of the few I'd actually buy over the internet.

Yeah, Headless Valley is to Canada what El Dorado was to America, I think. Although the legends about Headless Valley are obscure, when one unearths writings on the subject they always seem to include a number of different stories about the region.

EGADS- the test has finally come!

I HATE download-only products- not their content, their format!

The few that I have, I won or was gifted.

Now, I'm going to have to decide which force is stronger, my hatred of .pdf only stuff, or my love of Northern Crown!

Let the hand-wringing begin!
