Not Enough "News From GenCon"

The Green Adam

First Post
Is it me or has there not been a lot of news and information coming from this weekends GenCon? With the up-to-the-minute coverage afforded San Diego Comic Con and Toy Fair, I figured the news services and sites of our hobby would give a comparable treatment to GenCon 2008 but things have been fairly quiet. Is this because there just wasn't much to see or talk about or should we expect to see more 'after show' coverage when everyone gets home?

I'm actually there...um I mean here...right now. Highlights:

1.) Casting of the new D&D Weekly TV Drama "Pathfinders", by Joss Whedon.
2.) Keynote by Jon Irenicus on immortaity with guest Gary Gygax
3.) DDI playable demos of GameTable, MMORPG, and Turn Based Single Player.
4.) The Olympic Committee's demo of how D&D will be incorporated.
5.) LARPing with Oprah, Obama, Will Smith, Christian Bale, and Miley Cyrus (who has a real knack for it).
6.) 3d color printers (Character Visualizer compatible), DDI lifetime membership, entire 3.x library, and errated 4e books as swag.
7.) The unveiling of 5e (for release in 2018), it's 3.x, they just wanted to let the sides take a turn on the other side of the fence.
8.) The waterslides...hey I like waterslides what can I say?;)

I expect that this is a down year for GenCon, but I expect that 2009 will be an up year.

With the state of the GSL there is almost no 3PP products (though I've been scanning for information about the Goodman Games 4e modules). Also, Pathfinder is just now in "beta" and it isn't really ready for primetime. I expect that by next year Pathfinder will have its feet on the ground and that there will be a slew of 3PP 4e products as well for people to chat about.

I think it may also have something to do with the heavy D20 bent that this site has, especially in light of the release of 4E.

For example, it turns out the Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG was finally released by Fantasy Flight Games, a fact that's not even clear on FFG's own website (unless you check the forums). For those who don't know, Anima was originally a RPG from Spain featuring incredible Anime/Manga Art with a distinct Korean visual influence. The setting was well described as Final Fantasy meets Exalted.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of any major licenses being picked up as Star Trek, DC Comics and Marvel Comics are all up for grabs with renewed movie tie-in interest. Anything at all, not just 'what is XYZ company making for D&D'.

There was very little buzz about anything at the con. There was no big news that I heard, no must have proiduct I saw people playing or talking about. It was a fun convention but there was that added level of fanboy excitment that seemed to be missing.

Goodman Gmaes 1e modulkes look pretty good. I got both of them. I did not pick up any of their 4e books.

Without an indepth look Serenity Adventures looks to be good. I just like that they are doing more for the game line.

With an indepth read Bucceeners of Freeport is really cool. I think I would have liked less info on each character and more characters, but what is in there is good even for Green Ronin's high standardes.

Candwick for Monsters and Other Childish Things looks good but that hasn't been read either.

Don't Lose your mind (for the game Don't rest your head) is a headtrip. It says so on the covers and they are not lying. I'm at a loss to explain the book because I don't fully know the game well enough to say how this fits into it. But it is odd and wierd and in such good ways.
