So, I got quoted out of context and a bunch of old-guard gamers are all fired up to defend their sacred way of life.
What is it about powergaming that puts people on the defensive and makes them feel illegitimate? What is it that causes the fiery speeches about how "If we're having fun, then darn it, that's good enough for us!" Why are people threatened by other peoples' competence?
Some of you will no doubt want specifics. Yes, I stated that "everyone" "who isn't new" knows of Divine Metamagic: Persistent and what can be accomplished with it. Within minutes of that post, I posted in response to someone else's comment, clarifying that this should definitely be taken in context. Here's the context - this occurred in a character-optimization thread. As such, I don't feel that there is anything inaccurate or threatening about the statement that everyone who builds optimized characters who isn't new to char optimization will have some inkling of how divine metamagic: persistent works.
Of course, the nuances were lost. My interlocutor crossposted and triggered a rantfest in the GENERAL forum about how powergamers don't fit in with other people. Hello? Character optimization thread? Context?
I realize that asking people to investigate things fully on the internet, particularly on a messageboard, is futile. The reply button is right there, after all, and the main point of a forum is that users entertain themselves by posting their knee-jerk responses. I'm fine with that.
But really, the next time you're going to quote someone, try doing it in context.
