Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

Galwynn looks down at the bruise already forming on his skin. "Weird. It felt a lot worse than it actually was. I'll live."

Slightly healed, Galwynn nods his head, and then looks ahead at the room. "Let's go. Lead on... and keep an eye on the floor!"

The hallway opens up into a warm, well-lit living room. On the ceiling are two simple metal chandeliers with many lit candles each. To the left in the wall is an ornate fireplace with the remnants of logs smoldering within. A couch and two armchairs surround the fireplace, and a plain wooden table rests atop a woven rug in the center of the setup. On the right side of the room, a stone staircase ascends along the curve of the tower. A small door in the stairs probably leads to a closet-space beneath them. This side of the room seems rather barren, aside from a low dais with a small rock on it.

Looking back toward the hallway from which you came, you can see two sets of closed doors leading to rooms on either side of the entryway. On the inside of the doors, closest to the hallway, are tapestries depicting a wizard manipulating elemental energies. On the outside of each door are bookshelves. A quick perusal of the titles reveals a large variety of subjects, but nothing terribly in depth: A History of Enworld, Kobolds and Dragons, and even a few fictional novels, including a series by Larry Birchwald all about The Adventures of Sir Raynedil.

[sblock=Spot Check DC: 15]The rock on the raised dais seems to be growing in size at a slow but clearly noticeable rate.[/sblock]
[sblock=Spot Check DC: 20]You could almost swear that the smoldering logs in the fireplace are growing hotter and redder with each passing moment.[/sblock]

Tarag is distracted by the quality of the metalwork in the room. He has eyes for nothing else.

After a while, though, he says, "Has anyone else noticed that, even though the fire has burned down, these candles are still lit?"

He then heads over to examine the dais, curious as to why a piece of rock should be exhibited on it.

Galwyn keeps his blade drawn, and then whispers loudly, "Keep away from the fireplace and ledge! Something's not right!"

He will put himself between anybody (Keldar included) that gets near either of them, and is ready to kick either of them away should they move.

Keldar's eagle eyes sweep over the room, taking in every detail. Or they would, if he weren't distracted, perhaps by Tarag moving close to a dais in a wizard's sitting room, and certainly by Rapture's wink. Or perhaps by the book shelves. "Larry Birchwald?" he snorts. "A third rate hack. Sir Raynedil? Sir Randy Lie, more like. Thyrin should read Barely Dark War: Barry Lakeward in the Forest of Gloom by, er, Barry Lakeward. That's all based on, um, real events."
Keldar listens briefly at the doors flanking the hallways, but Galwynn's whisper makes him turn. A dagger flashes into his free hand.
"More elementals, I'd wager. Galwynn, not that I'd ever question your tactical genius, but do you think waiting for them to come get us is the best plan, when we could, oh, I don't know, surround one of them now and start bashing the moment it forms?"

Completely straight-faced, and without taking his eyes off the stone dais, Galwynn says "I don't believe in killing furniture before it has a chance to defend itself, Thief."

"Furniture... furniture," Keldar muses. "Right! We'll do it my way. Rapture, to the couch, quickly! No, no. Don't look at me like that. Help me push it to block the fireplace. If there's a fire elemental forming there, let it burn its way out while we beat up Galwynn's poor defenceless rock. Might just give us a few extra seconds."

"Well spotted, Galwynn! If Cassandra's information was right, only one elemental should reform quickly, and that one not so quickly as this. If another elemental is coming through the dias, it's probably traveling here from elsewhere rather than reforming. Which means that Keldar is right, we have a chance to meet them in a situation of our choosing. Keldar, if you have rope, a tripwire or a noose or something might help. Those earth elementals look fairly clumsy." Tommy readies his crossbow, but does not load it yet. He moves to someplace with a good view of the dias and fireplace, but not too close.

ooc: spot check 1d20-1=19 Cursed low wisdom score! :)

"I have two pints of oil. Galwynn had my rope," says Keldar, pushing at the couch with his thighs. "Do you think you can tie a short length around that rock before it sprouts arms and legs? Is there anything in here to tie the other end to?"

OOC: Keldar had two coils of hempen rope (DC 23 to burst), which he gave to Galwynn and Rapture right before we went to enter the tower the first time, with Samina. I guess one or other of them must still have it.
